Ok i have the new 46 8 series samsung. On dark scenes there is white spots everywhere. Its hard to descibe but its like its not tuned properly. Only appears on dark scenes. Noticed it a bit on SD, but watching Transformers on ble ray and it was appauling! Does anyone have blue ray transformers to confrim the dark scenes are really poor...or is it my tv. If it is my tv is there anyway to get a clear black instead of this snowy grainy picture. Annoying thing is now i knoticed it, i look for it in everything and its making it hard to watch tv happily.

Am new to blu-ray myself and this is what I've discovered.
With your TV you have to systematically fiddle (turn off/on/up/down) with every and I mean EVERY picture setting while watching the section of the blu-ray in question.
In my case for example was having trouble with dark scenes and grainyness on certain disks (I am Legend and some older films). Turned off digital noise reduction and problem was solved.
How many blu-rays have you got? If you have a lot and this is the only disk with a problem then is possible - however unlikely - that the disk is faulty.
If you only have a few and Transformers is the only problem I'm betting is the picture settings. May take a few minutes but is totally worth it. I have a Sony LCD but I believe this applies to all modern TVs - LCD or Plasma with their pages and pages of settings!

I have 6 blue rays. No country for old men is perfect....but transformers is appauling. I thought transformers was supposed to be a really good disc. It just has the grainy spots on dark scenes. Its really bad. I have now knoiticed it on SD scenes. My i am legend is fine. I will try turning off noise reduction. I havent tried that yet. TV settings are really annoying me. On my old tv i just had brightness, colour, sharrpness and contrast. Now there is like a million options.....and no onw seems to have the perfect settings for my tv. Its taking me ages to get a good pict. Thanks for your help and il keep trying.

ok thanks. i used finding nemo for set up. Then bought wall.e today and set up again. My settings were near on perfect....so transformers blueray must be rubbish as im currently watching matrix and there is no snowy grainy picture in dark scenes like there is when i watch transformers.

I have one other question tho...when doing the contrast on the thx set up, it doesnt work. It says raise/lower contrast so you cant see the white lines on the right, and the ones on the left are barely visible. No matter what i do, i can always see the lines on the right. When i lower contrast to 0, then i cant see anything obviously, but if i raise it, it just makes everything go brighter, including the lines and i can always see them, even if i put contrast in 100. So i dont get it. How do i find the perfect contrast.

Have just checked a few scenes from my copy of Transformers - if I sit very close to the screen, it looks a little more noisy in some scenes compared to others, but doesn't seem to be anything to do with dark scenes. When sitting at normal viewing distance, it looks fine (well, very good in fact!).
I can't explain what you're getting if it looks okay on other discs - was there any particular scene you were noticing this?

i knoticed it when the kid saw his car stand up in the junkyard and he starts recording on his phone saying his car is alive. After that scene i pretty much see it on every dark scene, if u put the contrast full up(i dont have it fully up, just did it to test) then the dark scenes are the worst i have ever scene. it actually looks like its snowing. white spots everywhere. i only have my contrast on 60 but its still noticeable. I wouldnt mind if it was SD, but i didnt expect it on Blue ray. I stopped watching the film and prob wont watch it again.

I have transformers on hd dvd and the dark scenes look great no snowy grain at all. The bluray version uses the same 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 (2.40:1) encode so there is no reason why it should look any different. My I Am Legend is also clean in the dark scenes..which blu ray player do u use?

I had a similar problem with the incubus - alive at red rocks BD. All other discs were fine exept for the dark scenes on this particular disc (and it's a night concert so there's plenty of dark scenes). I also have a samsung LCD (older model) and the problem turned out to be display settings for that particular input (hdmi1) which was still set to dynamic. Set it to normal or movie and turn off DNR(!) and your problem will most likely go away.
