Is it true that SONY will be bringing this out later on in the Summer 2008

If so I can see 40Gb Version prices falling sharply over the new few months

If they are bringing out the 80GB player I for one will try and be in the front of the buying queue

I'm not sure how true this is. I've heard the rumours too, but nothing concrete.

I'd be very interested in knowing what functionality they'd be improving/introducing over the current versions.

I'm hoping this is more than just a increase in storage capacity as you can do that yourself by simply swapping the hard drive. Maybe they would try to make it a little quieter...........(lights touch paper and backs away!!!!)!!

Well, they've sold an 80Gb version in the states for quite some time. This includes all the bits which were stripped away from the 60Gb version to make the 40Gb i.e. card slots, backwards compatibility, 4 USB sockets. If they do bring this over, whether they'll just port this over to us or update it in any other way remains to be seen...

Sony haven't announced any plans as yet, though the 80GB version was quickly phased out in the US, much like the premium 60GB console over here.

As HD prices drop and Sony offer movies via the PlayStation Store, it's a possibility that Sony may go down this route although it's always worth remembering that you can easily slot in a drive yourself as long as it's compatible. You'll need a SATA one - Maplins sell a 250GB one for £99.

So it has! I just saw the 80Gb version on Amazon.com so I assumed it was still for sale there, but having checked again, I realise now they just re-direct you to other sellers via this link. Ignore what I said above!

I've heard rumours of a 120/160 GB version to complement PVR peripheral which is on its way. May even be bundled?
However, haven't seen anything official. Doesn't mean it won't happen.
Anyone remember Sony's denials of a price drop for the 60GB version in October 2007?

You can get a 320GB for £72 that's compatible with the PS3.
