playing dvd-rs

I have a Panasonic Home Cinema DVD player. My dad has a JVC dvd recorder which can record onto DVD-Rs. when playing a dvd-r on the JVC you will often see it break up, not watchable. when i play the same dvd on my panasonic it will play fine with no breaks. why is this? this is the same with many dvd players not just the JVC. also i found that the cheap dvd players you can buy tend to play these dvds with no problems as well.

There are really only three things I can think of

1. perhaps a firmware update is needed

2. the jvc does not like the disks being used

3. Are the disks being finalised properly
