Pioneer PDP428XD discontinued

Depends what it's being sold for and what the spec is. I see from your earlier posts you want a good screen for gaming - if it's not 1080P your games won't look thier best but if you are willing to [lay at 1080i then I think you'll be happy with it.

Yes, definitely, especially if you can get a good deal on it. I know we're due to go the press launch of the new Pioneer screens later this month, but it's still a cracking TV.

Is this set really being discontinued? When will its replacement be announced? Any details?

Yikes! So the current Pioneer 428XD might be the last 42 inch Pioneer plasma then?

Can any of the new Panasonic plasmas match the Pioneer 428XD?

Well a few people have seen both sets and have said that they are very very close on performance. Pioneer have slightly darker blacks and are a bit better with sd content. Panys really excell at full hd and are almost as good with sd.

I would say the Pioneer is probably the best set, going by the magazine reviews and owners. But then you do pay more for the Pioneers. I have the 42"PZ85 Pany and im very impresed with it. I havn't seen the Pioneers but the blacks are very very dark on the Pany.

To para phrase Spinal Tap:"So the question is how much more blacker can you get?""Well, none, it's none more black"

Looks like the Pioneer 428XD will really be the last of the 42 inch plasmas for Pioneer according to the Pioneer Europe website. http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/content/press/news/kuroPortfolio.html

Given this earlier announcement, is there any point to the upcoming announcement from Pioneer UK?

I think I better run out and book a Pioneer plasma quick before they are all sold out!

Not really, but we like to let them have their fun.

Good plan.

By the way, for more Sea King advice, see here.

Ha! Ha! Sidetrack a bit. Is there any way I can correct the typo in my username?

AFAIK, no. I'd stick a picture of a helicopter on as my avatar and make the most of it...

Done!

BTW, is the Pioneer PDP428XD still the undisputed king of plasmas after all the recent tests that have been done on the newer models from Panasonic, etc.?

To date, yes. And nice avatar!

Yes, always good to see an aviator avatar.

Looks like the latest announcement by Pioneer UK is the same as the earlier announcement in the Pioneer Europe website.

Any details on the specifications of the new models? Would it be worth waiting for the new models or just buying the "old" models now given that the new models will all be Full HD?

I'm sceptical that the new Pioneer LCDs will perform well given that Sharp LCDs have never been rated highly.

If it were me I'd try to get a current model as I don't believe the new 42" LCD's will be as good as the 42" Plasmas. I live to be proven wrong though.

I'm just glad I got my Kuro last year.
