Hi everyone!

I'm looking to buy a new TV for my new home in the next month or so. I've shortlisted my choices to either the Pioneer PDP-508XG or the Sony Bravia KLV-46X300A based on the reviews in What Hi-Fi?

I intend to use this TV for the next 10 years so buying something that is "future-proof" would be great.

While the Pioneer PDP-508XG seems to have received great reviews, my main hesitation towards getting it is that it is not a Full HD 1080p set unlike the Sony Bravia.

How important is it to have Full HD 1080p to be "future-proof"? Has anyone read/done a head to head comparison of these 2 models?

Thanks for the advice!

Simple answer here is Pioneer Plasma over and Sony LCD PERIOD! get you Head around the fact it is not Full 1080p and actually look at just how much better the whole picture quality is on the KURO over that of the LCD. The Pioneer is future-proof in that it will accept a 1080p signal and scale it to fit its native resolution and seeing as HD TV is brodcast at either 720p or 1080i there is no worries there either.

With DJ Krime all the way on that one. The Pioneer is still the best 50" set around at it's price. If you're really worried about not having 1080p then also check out the Samsung and Panasonic Full HD sets. They're very good value and better performers compared to their LCD counterparts - at larger sizes a lot of LCDs have major backlighting problems. To be honest though, if you've got the money for the Kuro, you should go for it. Despite the lower resolution, it gives a better picture than just about any other set out there due to it being superior in every other department - colour reproduction, contrast, de-interlacing, scaling and processing. Don't get bogged down by the numbers game. I wouldn't worry about 1080p if you sit closer than 8ft from the set as you wouldn't really see the difference anyway.

Thanks for the replies!

I finally was able to do a side by side test of the Sony X Series versus the Pioneer and yes, I agree with your conclusion that the Pioneer beats the Sony X Series.

This was evident while watching action scenes where there was some clear smearing with the Sony particularly with the darker scenes.

But I've read on this forum that the Pioneer 42 inch is now being discontinued?
