Pioneer PDP-508XD at £1450 or Pioneer PDP-LX5090 at £2250?

Ok, I have just bought a Yamaha YSP-40, a Yamaha DVD-S2700 and an Arcam Logo subwoofer. And I am getting a Just Stands rack because the Atacam Equinox is too wee.

I just need a television, a 50' plasma from Pioneer. I might as well.

Could you please tell me if it is worth paying £800 more the newer model?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Clare

I will be buying a Blu-Ray player very soon. I also have the opportunity to purchase an ex-dem 508XD for a decent price - are you saying that it's worth the significantly extra outlay for the latest model?

Your viewing distance is an important factor in this case. If you sit more than ten feet away from the set, you could well save yourself a load of money and go for the 508XD. It's when you sit quite close that the LX models start coming into their own.

If you can get to somewhere like TLC Broadcast in Borehamwood, you could compare all three side by side in their special viewing room. People have told that from 10ft they couldn't tell me which was the Full HD set until the pause button was pressed and they moved a bit nearer to the screen to appreciate the extra detail. If you do sit that far away, you may be paying all that cash for slightly better blacks and extra detail that you may not be close enough to appreciate. If you're going to shell out for a top tv, I think it's definitely worth the trip to a dealer who'll let you compare them side by side.

Hi there

Many thanks for your advice - I sit probably 10 feet away from my Plasma (Fujitsu 42" monitor). ÿI've always been very very happy with the picture quality but I have definitely noticed an improvement when I've seen HD TVs in stores, hence my interest.ÿ

Hi,
Remember the 5090 is the newer model with 5 x better black levels according to Pioneer - at some places it comes with a 5 year warranty for around £2400 which which nearly work out the same as the older 508XD if you forked out for a 5 year warranty yourself. I would go for the 5090 as you will not need to upgrade for a long time with this model.

About £1600 as opposed to £2200 full-price - subject to negotiation I'm sure!

Brand new?!? If it is, that's a stonking offer and I'd be sverely tempted especially if it came with any kind of warranty. In fact, I'd probably snap their hand off. The LX508 is by no means out of date. It's second only to the newer model and not by much. Of course, if you can afford it and want the security of a five year warranty, go for the LX5090 but I can think of a lot of things I'd rather spend that £650 on rather than just better blacks.

It's actually a shop demo model but just sits quietly there humming away so to speak. The only reason I'm holding back is simply concern as to whether 50" is simply too large for our lounge as opposed to the current model which is 42". Of course, I'll also get the balance of the Pioneer warranty too on this model. For the time being I'm dithering...
