I have a Pioneer Kuro 5080 along with a Marantz 7005 amp. At the end of the month I will be getting the new Oppo 93 BD multi region player.

I have the video scaler on the amp switched off as the Pioneer is better at scaling. However Im just wondering what would be the best settings for my combo in view of the Oppo's video scaler.

The Pioneer is not full HD, ie 1080p, but 1080i. Will the Oppo need to be set at 1080i, as it has the following scaler Qdeo by Marvell - The BDP-93 incorporates Marvell's Kyoto-G2 video processor with the second generation Qdeo™

Thanks.

Are you sure about the specs on your Kuro? All the models that were released under the "Kuro" banner were 1080p if I remember correctly. And previous to "Kuro" the models in the lower ranges were 720p (I don't think they ever released a native 1080i set) but these were ones of few sets out there that would accept a 1080p signal and convert it internally to best match the screen. Regardless... we don't know what the new Oppo BDP-93 is using as its scaler chip but the old BDP-83 had a really good one and on my system I set the BDP-83 to do the scaling at source. You may want to experiment with your chain of kit and see for yourself were you get the best scaling results. The Pioneers were really good at scaling, but their scalers are getting a bit old in comparison now.

There where 2 generations of the 5080 kuro prior to the 5090 being launched, the original was 768p due to it's pixel arrangement, but compatible with 24fps 1080p sources.

The second was the "LX" version, which was full 1080p HD, but as Tom states you will be best doing a little trial and error when you get your new player to see which is best.

There are 2 scenarios here

1) DVDs: These will need to be upscaled to 1080i, so don't set the Oppo to 1080p (otherwise the image will be upscaled to 1080p & then downscaled to 1080i - too much processing on the picture resulting in worse results). Set the Oppo to either 1080i or 576p or automatic.

2) Blu-ray discs: Set the blu-ray player to "Automatic" or 1080p.....& let the TV downscale it to 1080i. If you want, you can try setting the Oppo to 1080i for it to downscale the image so the TV won't have to downscale it.

A bit of trial & error will help you know if the Oppo is a better upscaler/downscaler than the Kuro or not.
