Something I don't understand and hoping someone could explain.

On my CRT TV, the picture is very acceptable from whatever source I use. However, on LCD TVs (I've just returned a Philips 9705 for various reasons, but other TVs seem to suffer from it), you seem to need to change the settings dependent on the source or even channel.

Why is this? I don't understand why the source should make so much difference to the picture - red is red is red so how does an LCD screen interpret it differently?

Many thanks

As a recent convert to LCD,I do find I`m regularly changing the settings as well.

When it`s good though,it`s very good.

Agree about the CRT too.My old Matsui (don`t laugh,it`s all I could afford at the time)still has a fantastic picture.Glad I kept it.

Probably didn't help that you picked the one manufacturer that produce sets that need the most tweaking from different quality sources. Philips LCD TVs are great when you get them set up right, just a nightmare getting there.

Might be best trying another manufacturer.

I'm waiting for the new Panasonic range to become available (D30), tho I'm loathe to advocate their use of adverts in the EPG, so hopefully that will require less constant tweaking.

If anyone could explain why this is necessary, I'd love to know!

I used to have the same problem with my PS3/Sony LCD.

I had to tweak the picture all the time, but when I set the PS3 to HDMI limited as opposed to full, the tweaking stopped.

Something to do with the values : Full HDMI means values 0-255 whereas the TV like having limited 16-255.

If you try the LCD on analog only like the CRT you might find more consistent performance. Also try tweaking the HDMI output values of the source.

It might be the solution, but I find LCD quite acceptable (and I own a Pioneer Kuro). You don't have to worry about image retention and burn in all the time, and LCD can display peak whites a lot better than a plasma so the picture can look quite dynamic
