Just as a matter of interest, as I have 2 phono preamps (not both in use), what is the 'real world' impact of the different quoted frequency response figures? The acclaimed and reviewed CA 640p is rated at 20Hz - 50KHz, whereas the Rega fono mini is 15Hz - 100KHz. In theory, the Rega should be the better preamp, but is this actually, or necessarily the case?

But not necessarily due to the frequency response. The human ear can only hear 20hz-20000hz (assuming a youthful pair).

As always, it's down to listening and personal taste.

Also, if you were in the process of buying one from scratch, then the fono mini would get my vote, but as you already have a 640p, I wouldn't be overly worried about it - they are pretty close.

And the 640p has the benefit of a Moving Coil stage if you wanted to upgrade your cartridge in the future.

And then there's the frequency response of the Stylus to complicate matters further!

I don't know why I find this so fascinating, but it may be something to do with owning an anorak.
