Hi all, i have been avidly reading some of the threads pertuant to the Philips 9664. Makes very interesting reading. I am actively looking for a replacment for our 28" JVC crt (which has been fantastic for the past 8 years). Usage is mainly freeview and dvds (tho may change to blu-ray at some point). We now have a house with a fairly large living room and the telly looks lost. Reading last months magazine i saw the praise bestowed on the 9664 and started looking at the views/reviews. Now the price is dropping i can soon stretch to the high price, especialy as it should be somewhat future proofed . Don't want plasma due to screen burn in (the tv is on ALL day, every day).

The only thing that puts me off a little are all the reports about having to continously change the settings. Is it really that bad or can i just set it up initialy then leave it? Is there a facility to save personal settings? Is it easy to do or a nightmare?

It'll annoy me if i have to adjust the set every time i change channel or stick a movie on. My 2 year old loves CbbC and the Scooby Doo movie (how many times now?!), and i don't want to spend 15 minutes setting it up every time i change between the two.

My other half really fancies the Samsung led 8000 so help me confince her the 9664 is the way ahead.

Thanks in advance for your input.

We have the 42inch 9664 as you may have read on here already.

I do find I like the Natural Motion on with somethings and off with others (turning it off disables the 200Hz too). I am very motion sensitive though (more than everybody else it seems - and more than my lady). That is pretty much the only thing I change, but I may do it once or twice in an evening if we watch say sport, a sitcom then a film (I like Cycling and F1 and have it on for them, but off for much US TV and some movies). I am not sure if this would be as needed in HD though when the screen's scaler is not in use (we only have SD Sky at the mo' and another very helpful 9664 owner on here who upscales Sky through his Denon amp does not meddle so much).

It is not very difficult or time consuming though -

press HOME - SETTINGS scroll down 1 to Picture - scroll down several to Perfect Pixel - First setting is Natural Motion.

Takes me 5 seconds. It only changes the settings for that input (specific HDMI, Component or SCART), so you do not mess with any other connected device when you do change it. If you change settings for DVD it won't alter your TV viewing.

I personally find the colours and depth of this screen way beyond the Samsungs - but others may disagree. Hope that helps.

I spent quite a bit of time fine-tuning the settings on mine, but now that's it done, I leave them alone and am perfectly happy whether I'm viewing TV, Blu-ray or DVD. Don't see the need to constantly fiddle about.

OK - it's my eyes. I am very sensitive and my other half does not seem to need any changes.

Thanks guys, i was under the impression i would have to continously fiddle. Even turning 1 thing off or on occassionaly is fine. Andy seems to have nailed it though and thats encouraging. Andy would you be happy to share the settings you use?

Also, where can i find them? Even on the internet they seem a rare beast.

Thanks for your view on the samsung Badamz, would love to see what the team think of the two as a direct comparison now theres little price difference. (tho i think i may know the answer.)

We got ours from Richer Sounds who were willing to beat the deal offered by John Lewis and Tec7 in House Of Fraser (these 3 seemed to be the only people selling this TV in my home City). The department stores have 5 year warranty as standard (and Lewis do free home delivery) but Richer matched all that and gave a lower price (as promised on their website). Normally the Richer 5 Year cover is 10% of the price - not for us. Just ask them.

I do think it would be a good idea for somebody else to make a Samsung comment (mine is true for me).

Andy - have you made any adjustments to the white balance settings? Last night I watched a bit of 'Last Chance to See' on BBC2 before 'Brazil' on BBC1 and I felt there was a hint of green tint. I am slightly colour blind - and sensitive generally (I notice many trails and blotches when watching a plasma - which put me off them completely). My girlfriend (I call her that but it's been 17 years!) does not notice any green hue.
