Just spotted that Richer Sounds is advertising the Philips 40" 9705 at £1,995.99. Is that the going rate or has anyone found a lower price?

Also, is this set likely to be reviewed by What Hi-Fi in the near future?

i seen the 46" 9705 for £2200 on sound and vision and am very tempted with the 47" 9664 for £999

Having had another look around it would be interesting to see if the new internet TV platform Philips have planned will be coming to the 9705 series.

I noticed a few UK users got hold of these new TV's this week (and more coming monday)
Majority reported buzzing from the back panel - reported to be a hardware issue, i noticed one etailer had to take a few back because of this.
Ambilight buzzing as well (not as bad as above)
Lack of UK based content (no surprise philips do tend to ignore the UK market

things the same as last years models?
rare but still awesome sets on paper

Seems people have also reported the TV has crashed a few times via various sources (PS3 and built in tuner) only way to get TV back to working state was to pull power for wall.

it seems the buzzing noise gets worse on a black screen.

Saw someone in Germany with a 40" model had it repaired by Philips (so they admit its a problem) but when it came back they now have serious backlight flickering.

Many unhappy users so far.

Noticed one guy went to see a demo unit in store and could hear the buzzing from the set in a busy noisy shop!

reports of severe ghosting effects in 3D mode have also come in.

How long do i give Philips to fix these before looking at other models :)

the noise from the sets seems to be a known issue now - i can only assume Philips had everyone who owned a 40" complain :)

it was under investigation by the Philips technical development department - we have to wait for more info.

FYI the 46" also seems to have a buzzing noise coming from the unit.

Philips have suggested to users to reset the device and install latest firmware but that did not do anything to correct the issue (probably because its a hardware fault)

my advice - advoid for now

the Philips call center in Portagul is advising consumers not to buy the 9705 because it has a defect.

Interesting huh - now to try and get something out of the UK lads

I, I guess like many others, have been waiting patiently for the 9705. Has WHIFI any views/news on this alleged fault?

I remember reading around a year ago that phillips stated that they want to concentrate on quality and not quantity going foward which is why they intend not to push their sets in high street stores rather high end specialist store hmmmmmm..

Seems all of the tv manufacturers are having issues of late

We're still waiting for review models - delays with 3D packs/firmware blamed. No other news or firm info. And we'll treat all rumours as just that- rumours- until we learn hard facts and have hands-on experience.

Andy Clough:Hope to have a reply tomorrow. Will keep everyone posted.

awesome news thank you.

On a related note the Chief Engineer of Philips Spain when asked about the noise Issue said they are not admitting that is a fabrication problem but if any customer complains, they will replace and calibrate the Power Source.

So perhaps the culprit is the Power Source.

:) Of course i expect this could all be made up - i have not seen (heard) the issue my self but just go by reports from users who own the TV all over the EU.

Now they could be telling porkies but seems a lot of people all made up the same story at the same time :p

As for the Spain Philips guy - That info came from an email from a dealer who is helping a customer with this issue.

Cant wait for some offical response - then i can go and buy one! On the plus side i have seen reports of users happy with the units :)

All made up? I for one don't think so!

Well there out in the market to buy and have been a few weeks so why haven't we seen a review on what hi-fi buy one review it and send it back simple? I am going to speculate that there is an issue to hide that's why there's been no review yet and it needs to be brought forward! Its frustrating the support lines denied any problem and never log any calls from users and even non from myself when I re-asked there support line!

I was one of the first with this issue here in the UK who brought this issue forward with two 32" sets whistling I was not aware of the issue previously but soon as I booted mine up it was there and fault was confirmed when I sent back to RGB direct. was brought on 12th august serial starting VN1A 1024.

Same for second set and that was from a different place BHS direct as first supplier only had one left (mine), confirmed faulty with noise yet again!

The 15000hz-18000hz whine sends you crackers and that if the contrast whimpering don't do your head in first! you can have the volume upto 30 on the 32" and still hear it! The set crashed flicking through scrambled freeview channels, and also sometimes inverted its own menu.

even my dealer of my pre-ordered 40" has sent back 3 of his sets to philips and waiting for a response from his rep! he tested 2 40"'s and 1 46" he could hear the noise over his AIR CON! I was told monday I will not be getting my TV as its unacceptable for such a premium product! I hope to hear more soon.

I've been following this for ages now and seen the problem on 4-5 different forums outside the UK I plan on waiting myself I'm eager to buy! but feel this is apple and the iphone 4 all over again! free headphones anyone?

I'm eager to see a fix as I loved the 32" its an amazing set and excited to get the 40" but I won't buy while this defect still persists!

Hi,

The info of SOSAGES is coming from my posts in another forum. Here is the all story.

I'm from Portugal but bought a 40PFL9705H from a online store in Spain. I got the unit last Friday and has soon I turn it on I started to listen to the Noise Issue. It is really annoying and I could hear it from 6 meters (across the living room). The sound changes has you change the Contrast. Last Monday I enter in contact with Philips Portugal and my Dealer to figure out what to do. Monday I call Philips and they just told me that they didn't know anything about the issue, but the Tuesday call I got a confirmation from the Call Center that that they are receiving complains and are Investigating. The guy from the Call Center even told me to return the TV to the Store and say this exact phrase: "I don't buy Defected Products!". It is a strange phrase to say when you are in a call center of a company like Philips, but he did it. Since returning the set was complicated, I immediately arrange to have a visit from the Technical Support of Philips. Yesterday morning they went to my place and confirmed that that noise wasn't normal and it shouldn't be happening. They call the Main Office and asked someone to check in the DataBase if the there was a solution, they reply that there was. They took it and told me that at least 8 days until I get it back.

Today, I got an email from the online store from Spain, saying that they contacted the "Chief Engineer of Philips Spain about the Noise Issue and where told that they are not admitting that is a fabrication problem but if any customer complains, they will replace and calibrate the Power Source. It seems that the culprit is the Power Source."

I have been reading Forums from Portugal, Spain, Greece, Germany and UK, and there is also a lot of people complaining about the noise. It seems that the 46" version just a few have problems, but the 32" and 40" is where there is more issues. Where there's is Smoke, there's is a Fire!

Since Philips doesn't say anything, there is a lot of confusion and theories. Some are saying that model that where fabricated after week 35 don't have the problem.

Philips should just come forward and admit that there are some units with a problem and correct it immediately. Where are talking about a Premium Product here!!

I hope What HiFi get a official response from Philips about this main issue.
