Now this looks a great test the Perfect LCD VS the Perfect LED.

Any chance or comparisons please, anyone seen? heard, know, great chance to compare the two technologies?

Should this be in the TV section? Can someone switch it for me please.

Thanks

Thanks for that

I'm afraid this test is impossible. The 40PFL9704 LCD does not exist. The nearest you can get to your comparison is the 40PFL9704(LED) versus the 37PFL9604 (LCD). I suspect the LED will win hands down.

Why are shops selling it if it does not exist?

The 9704 is an LED lit LCD TV. It is easy to see where the confusion lies.

LED TV is not a new type of TV it is a variation of LCD TVs.

I am talking about the philips 40PFL9704H Lcd where's the confusion?

If you are talking about the philips 40PFL9704 LED that's the LED without the H

If it has the H it's the LCD.

Looking at the December price list from Philips there is one version of the 40PFL9704 and it has an H at the end of. I must add that every other TV on the list also has an H as a suffix and not one is without it.

Within the UK market the 40PFL9704H and 40PFL9704 are the same model and both numbers refer to an LED backlit LCD. To the best of my knowledge there is no 40PFL9704 without the LED backlighting

I have seen both tv's listed for sell on the same UK website - one clearly a LED and one clearly a LCD.

Most of Philips's 2009 TVs have an 'H' at the end of the model number, but this is often left off on websites and in reviews. Like other manufacturers, Philips produces LCD TVs with LED backlighting, rather than 'pure' LED models.

Is there the small chance that the one website that refers to these as distinct models may have made a mistake?

I am happy to suggest that I may be wrong but when I look at the documents produced from Philips in conjunction with the converstaions with my Philips representative and the websites and literature from my competitors it all adds up to there only being one version.

Indeed, I think it may be the websites that have got it wrong. There's a huge amount of marketing confusion about LED at the moment, which can lead to misinformation.

The website I found them on seems to have change there information so you could be right FrankHarvey with there is only one model?

We've been starting our testing of the LED-backlit Philips today - it'll get extensive testing against its Award-winning sibling and others...

Hi Claire!

Great to hear!! Please can you give a definitive viewpoint in the review as to how the SD & blacks compare to the G9 Kuro's and which is the better set overall? If it is still the Kuro, how close do these LED Philips get?

Bazzy!

When was we going to get to read the review again Clare.

Thanks

gel:When was we going to get to read the review again Clare.

Read it again? Not sure, and Clare made no promises about putting it online - it's in for the February issue, so I guess some time in the New Year, unless Clare or Andy C decide to put it online sooner.

Did I? ! Let's get the TV tested first (including comparing vs Kuro) before we work out how/when the review will appear

Our reference 50in. Obviously it can't be a like-for-like comparison due to size differences, but it'll be interesting to compare aspects such as black levels, contrast etc etc

Can we please concentrate on picture quality ie tv and blu ray and contrast not black levels.

I really don't know what black levels has to do with the quality of a tv.

Thanks

There is 47" version also available and it would make more sense to compare it with Kuro, I have compared both the 40" 9704 and 47" 9704 and I think both are better then award wining 40" 9664 but for a LED standard they are thicker then 9664 not sure why. I've also noticed that 40" of both 9664 and 9774 are sharper then their big brothers, I clearly noticed more brightness in white scenes and colors are more vivid, I guess LCD technology has still not matured enough to do justice for 47" and bigger sizes, both Samsung and Kuro plasmas in 50" gives much more brightness, black level and vivid colors then their LCD counterparts I am sure Clare will agree with that remark
