PCM Sound tracks

Quite a number of Blu-rays have PCM or LPCM soundtracks as opposed to the HD soundtracks.

Should the blu-rays player settings be sent to bitstream or PCM?

PCM soundtracks are probably the most 'HD' compared to Dolby Tue HD and DTS HD Master Audio since they are the uncompressed separate channels which the latter two are used to compress.

So they need no decoding - although ideally all of the above would give the same result in theory - but they take up a lot of memory space on the disc. You should be able to leave the player set to bitstream and the player will pipe the (L)PCM channels down the HDMI connector.

It depends on your receiver and what it can decode.
I send mine in bitstream using HDMI and my Onk decodes the signal as DTS HD master audio etc.

No that is missing the point.

PCM requires no decoding; therefore PCM soundtracks are read off the disc and are subject to the minimum processing right throughout the chain. For example Casino Royale boasts a 5.1 uncompressed PCM soundtrack and no DOLBY True HD or DTS Master Audio, both of which can be decoded either by a player or an amp which turns the soundtrack into PCM channels.

Therefore opting for the PCM soundtrack will not depend on what the receiver or the amp can decode.
