Passive sub?

I have a Sony DAV 5.1 system with a passive sub. I'm upgrading to a decent Sony STRDN1000 amp - I'm happy with the speakers, but do I have to get an active sub or will the amp power the sub ok or is this just one of those listen and you decide type questions?

You'll have to either get an active sub, or an extra power amplifier to drive the existing sub you have.

If it were my money, I'd go for the active subwoofer. Oh, and I think you'll probably need some better speakers to get the most out of the new Sony receiver, which will struggle to drive the tricky load the little golfball-size speakers you have now present to the amplifier.

They're really only designed for use with their dedicated system, not with a separate AV receiver.

You will need an active subwoofer as the new amp will not be able to power your existing one.
