Hello all

I have just set-up my Panasonic TX-P42G10 plasma tv and Pioneer BDP-51 FD blu-ray player, my question is how do i know which of these is upscaling the picture............ i can see the setting on the blu-ray but cannot see if the TV is also upscaling, which is what i don't want?

Cheers.

If your Blu-ray player is definitely doing the upscaling, then the Panasonic will simply display the upscaled information without getting any further involved.

Apologies for hijacking, but just how good is the scaling of standard definition pictures (specifically broadcast television) on the new Panasonics? I am going to get a Humax Freesat PVR and am looking at one of the new Panasonics (prob the 50 inch V10). I know the tele obviously upscales, but what is the upscaler like in the Humax? Would I benefit from sending the signal from the Humax through something like to Onkyo 876 to get it upscaled to 1080p for the tele to display? Thanks.

Thanks maxflinn. I didn't think it would be too good! The Standard Definition pics I have seen (freeview) on the Panasonics always look a little soft to me. Is the scaler in the Onkyo for example a lot better does anyone know? I seem to remember reading the article about scaling in the mag a few months back and reading that the scaling of the Onkyo 876 was comparable to that of the Pioneer 5090. It will bug me incessantly if I'm not getting the best Standard Def pic possible (can't afford the Pioneer!) Any tips anyone would care to offer?! Thanks.

I know maxflinn, the Pio every time but £1500-£1600 is my absolute maximum though and the Pioneer seems to have gone up in price to £2000 or more since they have become thin on the ground! Always the way! I would love the Pio, but unless I see one for £1500, it ainlt gonna happen!

Fingers crossed the Panny betters the PZ8* range (and hopefully the S10/G10/G15 too) Roll on the WHF review!

50v10 is £1600 on play .com ... kuro is best priced £1750ish plus £300 or so for pedestal stand and speakers i think ... maybe the v10 will be nearly as good , and it has freesat .. a close call ...

As we're always told on here - the only thing to do is see the Panny in the metal when it's released and decide then. I hope the SD pic is good, as I could do without spending more than I can really afford to improve the pic to the best I can. It will be strecthing me to get the 50", but I shall live on pot noodle if needs be for the next few months! Thanks for your input maxflinn!

Hello maxflinn - assuming we have read the same review, the performance of the v10 looks fantastic, apart from with SD sources! Bother (or something like that). I shall have to see if RS will let me hook up an 876 to a panny plasma in store to see if the pic benefits. Prestwich here I come!

id say it was the same review ok , theres only one out there i think , the thx setting gets high praise , assuming you wont be sitting too close as it is a 50 inch after all , id bet the sd would be good enough ... id say if you can get one for £1600 , at that size and with freesat it would be hard to beat ... i would hazard a guess that the kuro wouldnt be £600 better ....happy hunting....
