Dont you hate it when you do all your home work, read the reviews etc and your mind is made up. I had decided to go for the panasonic 42-PZ80 nice looking Plasma has everything i need, a great picture thats it thats all i was after was a great picture no
fancy specs. so i go into comet to buy the TV, when i saw a Samsung LE 40A656A LCD this is the new LCD with the redish frame. Well i was stopped in my tracks the picture was stunning, it was playing Cars through a Sharp Blu-ray Player, it did not look real the sharpness and brightness and 3 dimesionalality of the picure was superb, it was one of the best pictures i have seen. Anyway i thought i would be cheeky and asked if they would mind connecting the player to the panasonic which was nearly next to the LCD to my suprise they did this, and again the picture was stunning, but in a different way if that makes sense not so bright but still a superb picture. So i am really cheesed off as to which one to go for, i have to say the Samsung looks very nice, but its all down to picture nothing else just picture quality, and both are excellent so i am hoping i can get a little help with my decision, i know the pros and cons of LCDS and Plasmas, but have to say the Samsung is the best LCD i have ever seen, Any thoughts any one.

Thanks Andy

I think LCDs are great with cartoon-type films. Try comparing them with a real life film for natural colours.

You've picked up on some definate differences between LCD and Plasma. The LCDs do tend to be brighter and I think show more detail. Many however prefer Plasma becauase of its more"natural" clours and deep blacks etc.

I had exactly your dillemma not so long ago and was also considering the Panny and the Sony 40W4000. I "road tested" all three with all picture formats and although all three were superb, for me personally, the Samsung had the edge. It's just a personal thing. Many on this forum would probably tell you to choose a Panny. I say keep testing and make your own mind up.

I have found my Samsung to be everything I wanted from my TV & home cinema; when hooked up to the PS3 it looks a treat and with styling as it has, it looks great in my lounge and would do in many others!

Good luck on your choice!

The Samsung is a good TV, but we recently downgraded it to four stars whereas the Panasonic remains at five, so I'd definitely go for the TH-42PZ80. Stick with your original instincts.

Both TVs should look great with a hi-def feed of Cars as it's no real test for them. If it were me I'd test them out with a live action film and then a freeview feed if you can. IMO that's where the Panasonic will come up trumps in its colour reproduction, motion handling and black levels.

Thanks for the input, i did go back and played i am legend on both TVs, and both were excellent but it will have to be the Panasonic, i did some more research on other forums and found the samsung to have problems which was a shame. Anyway thanks the advice, back to comets sunday then.

Funnily enough, that was exactly where I ended up in my choices. In the end I took the plunge, and as of Friday 25th took home..................the Panasonic TH42PZ80 - and I'm really, really happy. If I were you, hurry to an authorised dealer if you can to get yourself a direct-with-Panasonic 5-year Warranty (rather than a shop one) worth £549 entirely free. It's a great offer, but it ends this Thursday 31st.
