For the last few weeks ive been running my 50VT30 on the THX setting but i was wondering if anyone had either had their tvs calibrated or tried it themselves? Wanted to know how big the improvement was and main benefits? Thanks

hi - i had my 42vt30 calibrated and it was definetely an improvement over THX default settings. THX always had a yellowish cast to me - thats gone now with the calibrated settings. 3d was also calibrated and it looks much more accurate now. I asked the calibrator who did my set to measure THX before he started as i reckoned it was pretty close and when he measured it he said surprisingly it was pretty good. He said it varies greatly though and he had done some 50VT30's and 65VT30's and they all measured a lot differently. So yes if you can afford it I'd recommend it. I never feel the twitch to change any picture setting any more. Whereas before calibration i was constantly tweaking.. settings are locked in now!

Mick,

Would any of the Spyder calibration type tools be of help for self calibrating a TV. Question being: Is it easier/cheaper to buy the tool and try it yourself, or is a trained professional the way to go?

So for the wordy question, but I think you know what I mean :)

To be honest, i tried using the spyder calibration with my last tv and its a painful process and i dont think i was getting it right. The problem is the accuracy of the spyder might not be good enough and the probe itself might need to be calibated. Then you have to consider that the calibration controls on the tv dont behave as expected. I know my calibrator had problems with the luminance controls on my vt30. He explained to me what should be happenning as he adjusted certain values but nothing was happening.. i think it would be hard to beat the value of a very experienced calibrator. Im sure there are others who are not as experienced offering the service. Im not sure if im allowed link to the calibrator i used but they are based in the Uk and id highly recommend. They also charge less for subsequent calibrations which was a nice surprise for me when i found out as this is the second tv he did for me
