Hi,

was looking at buying the Musical Fidelity M1 DAC to connect my Apple TV to and play through my Yamaha RXV667 AV Receiver.

What i wanted some advice on is if an external DAC make a huge difference over the Burr-Brown dac already inside my AV receiver?

as i play all my music now through apple TV as it saves the clutter of CD's everywhere

all my discs are uploaded to my laptop using itunes AAC 320kbps VBR

would really appreciate some advice as when it comes to DAC it's totally new on me

thanks

I use a level 4 modified CA DacMagic with my Yamaha Z7, and there's a big improvement over the internal Z7 DAC. In fact, for a while I had an Arcam AVR600 receiver, the CA (unmodified at that point) DacMagic was a pretty close match for the DAC in the AVR600, the DacMagic just edging it. With that in mind, I think you should turn the question around, is the amplification in my Yamaha up to the quality of sound the M1 DAC can produce? The answer I suspect is no, you won't hear the full benefit of what the M1 can bring to your system with your current receiver. I think I would buy the M1 with the idea of upgrading the amp in the future, or get a cheaper DAC, say around the £200 mark.
