Hi all,

first time poster, please be gentle ;-)

I'm looking to replace my ageing Bose lifestyle (no boo-hiss please) with seperate speakers and a receiver. They have to be "style" speakers to be wife and room friendly

I have been offered the original Kef KHT 2005 speakers and sub (PSW 2000) for £100. For that price, are they worth buying? They'll stay in a box until I've saved enough for a decent receiver (thinking Denon 1910?). As they're quite old, I can't find reviews or a comparison to more modern kit anywhere. It'll be Sky HD, the odd Bluray, PS3 and music (I use Sonos, so no CD player)

All and any thoughts welcome [:)]

YES!!

They were award winners in their time. And yes, they have been surpassed, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything (read "there's nothing") at the price that would beat them.

Big Chris:As long as they're all working it sounds like a no-brainer to me. Go for it.

I'm with Chris on this one, but try to hear them working first. KEF had some problems a while back with noisy/failing subs, and should this is the case, or if the little speakers have been caned and thus damaged, repairs are going to be pricey.

These are very valid points, and as you're buying them from a friend, I'm sure he'll be happy to oblige...

A correct fantasy though

Thanks everyone. I'll try and give them a whirl first.

Is there a time of the year when receiver ranges generally change, making potential savings available on slightly older kit? I can't see myself going down the 3D route anytime soon so 1.4 probably isn't needed, but I would like to be able to work with the up to date audio formats. Room size is appprox 20ft x 11ft although the speakers are only at one end.

And it's fair to say they still do. I had my sub repaired around three years ago at a cost of approximately £50. It failed again recently and this time Kef wanted over £120 to repair it, which is a ridiculous increase, especially considering it's a well known and publicised fault. Other than that, the speakers are excellent.

Lee H - There should be some good deals on last year's AV receiver models around now, as it's the time of year when the new ranges come in, so yes, it's definitely worth hunting around for offers.

Prices on "old" non-3D kit is pretty good at the moment. I've seen a denon AVR2310 at £439 online. 1910s were even cheaper, saw them at £349.95 at Richer sounds (collect in store, limited stock).
