Optical vs coaxial digital

What normally gives the better connection/quality, if you have the choice optical or coaxial? i'm guessing for optical its chanfed to light then back to digital whilst no change in digital signal from coaxial

Some say coax; some say digital; some say there's no difference. I've tried both, and have been hard pressed to tell the difference.

I have used both on my set up and cannot tell the difference, but the consensus is that over a longer distance coax seemed to be preferred......

The theory is coax, since as you say in optical there's a conversion from electrical. In practice, I think you'll be lucky to tell the difference (though I've found coax a more reliable connection on occasions)
