I have an LG 23LD350 TV and an Onkyo TX SR 502 5.1 receiver. The receiver doesn't have HDMI, so I'd like to connect my TV to the receiver via an optical cable. I connected the cable and it works fine. My problem is that I am now unable to use the native TV remote (or more accurately, the Comcast issued remote) to control the volume. Instead, I am stuck using the clunky Onkyo remote solely for volume control. I tried going into the TV settings, and there aren't any choices about audio output other than EQ and disabling the TV speakers. No matter what I try, the onboard TV volume doesn't actually do anything as long as the optical is connected. I previously had the TV attached using an RCA Y cable from the headphone out jack to the receiver. The optical yields much better sound, so I'd like to stick with it, but having to switch remotes is a pain. Any advice?
