Optical or RCA out from TV to receiver??

I've ordered the Pioneer PDP-428XD and Onkyo TX-SR705 (with 5.1 B&W speakers). My normal TV watching will be either aerial or scart straight to TV (I think that's all our digibox will have), so I want to output sound to the Onkyo.

The Pioneer I think has both optical and RCA out, but which would be best, and which input on the Onkyo should be used?

i have read that some products have only this ability: the optical out is works only with the tuner.

oh, yes i know, that this topiy is old, and the tv is also old.

but my friend asked me to do her homeciname system, she bought from ebay a pdp428xd and a yamaha rxv396rds.

the question is: the optical interface will work with all inputs?

or will it work with only the tuner?
