Optical cable quality

Someone here suggested that the quality of optical cable was irrelevant. In which case 'any old cable' must be perfect and indeed the optical out must be perfect. So why did I shell out for an expensive cable and why bother with this new HDMI stuff - lets all go perfect optical sound eh ?

Well for starters, optical doesnt allow the bandwidth through that hdmi does. And if they made a hdmi optical then its going to cause GREAT upset for EVERYONE thats bought a flatscreen tv.

On top of that, there needs to be an electrical to optical conversion at one end and vice versa at the other.

Mmm. Thankyou for that. So the quality of output sound is dependant on the relative quality of outputs in the amp. Choosing between HDMI, optical or co-ax will need some listening tests. Goody I've something to do again

Not if you want the HD Audio soundtracks, optical and co-ax can't carry them, HDMI is the ONLY choice.
