Optical cable help

Hi everyone,

Hi own a ps3 and want to setup my hifi so i can get 5.1 surround sound. I own a Sony Hifi system which is about 7 years old however, on the back it has a cd optical ouput. The stereo itself is cabaple of handling 5.1 etc.

My question is if i connect my ps3 to the optical output on the stereo will it work? Only reason for my concern is that it says cd optical output and i'm wondering if it means it only works when playing a cd.

Sorry if this sounds a little confusing but i am myself....ha ha

It sounds like it's an cd output for connecting to an exteranal dac or mini-disc recorder or the like, but no as it's an output it wont work

If the Sony hifi says optical out it will be an out, not an in. You should be able to confirm this by the presence of a little glowing red light when yo peer at the conection.
If it's an out you're out of luck as connecting PS3 out to HiFi out won't work.
As the last poster said Sony at that time probably had MiniDisc in mind.
