Now that this player has reared it's head in the uk, are we now going to say that this little fellow has moved all the goal posts and can quite comfortably compete against high end components such as the £2000 pioneers or £1100 sony's or denons DVD-3800BD bluray players etc....?

Having read Andrew Everard interesting take on the new oppo it seems likely it can to me, or am i mistaken and getting carried away, and can this performer gel nicely with high end Av amps and speakers to boot?.

Although this player will be priced mid budget range, does it mean that mid budget amp and speakers is all it deserves?

Maybe Andrew you could enlighten me because i am as keen as everyone else to purchase one if you think it could stack up against those mentioned above.

Regards Tony.

I bought one and I'm not using it with budget kit.

If you stream via HDMI then there is no limit to the level of kit you can partner it with. That's the beauty of HDMI and as a bonus you get amazing DVD upscaling too.

Andrew stated in his blog that this could be all the Universal Player You'll Ever Need.

Personally I think that says it all. The goalposts haven't been moved, they've been removed. There is no reason to buy a more expensive a digital source. Put all your money and attention into the amplifier, speakers, screen and importantly the room and set-up. The Oppo will never hold you back.

I've owned mine since June. Best machine I've ever bought and will only be made redundent if streaming media gets it's act together. For that, see the Popcorn Hour C200. It's still full of bugs, but once they're ironed out, this plus a NAS (Network Attached Storage) will start to take over. Maybe oneday we'll have internet streaming content, personally I think that's some years away. You need a gigabit home (wired) network to reliably stream BluRay rips. Unless you're going that route, buy the Oppo and don't look back.

Hope that helps.

I certainly take your points and i'm pleased to hear that you too, believe the goal posts have changed.

Streaming media like you say maybe not too far away but i still like to have my good old faithful discs especially with those slooooow BT phone lines at present ;-).

I think it's also a shame that Arcams bluray product hasn't come to the market yet with this kind of tech built in... oh well!

Andrew stated nothing of the sort.

He asked the question, and concluded that the Oppo was entirely suited to his particular needs. For the formal WHFSV review verdict, see the Awards issue, on sale October 20, or the previous weekend at the Manchester Show.

Yep, but at least the masses should have theirs by then and you can get some respite from the "Is the Oppo better than..", Has the Oppo got a better chip than..", "Is the Oppo good at playing SACD..." etc, etc, etc

Indeed - have the feeling Will the Shill will be reaching orgasmic 'told you so' fever pitch next week.

Be prepared for me to be online at all kinds of ungodly hours: middle of the night UK time, stuff like that...
