Hi there :)

I have chance to buy second hand Onkyo 9000R for the price of Marantz pm 8005. So my question is it corect to compare those two amplifiers becouse 9000R is part of referentz series and according to that it is in league with pm 14 or pm 11 rathar than 8005.

Thanks in advance

The Onkyo has impressive music power in short bursts, but its continuous power rating is lower than that of the Marantz PM8005 (75Wpc IEC vs 70Wpc RMS). The high current design in effect is like the NAD PE. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, but they are different concepts. Depending on choice of speakers, type of music and listening habbit, one could edge over the other, or maybe there won't be any appreciable difference.

PM-14S1 SE looks comparable in power. PM-11S3 is in a different league. Doubles down it's RMS power ratings 100Wpc in 8R / 200Wpc in 4R. Also build quality is not comparable to the Onkyo.

Thanks Vladimir,

For now I am satisfied with the B & W 685 S2. I like pop and classical music from time to time.

I know that Onkyo is a bit more versatile than Marantz and I did not really mean to go to that league. But suddenly I get the chance to grab the A9000R for less than 8005, so I became curious, and the underlying experience I know will not make the change so fast.
