I am going to replace my old Yamaha amp with either an Onkyo 607 or Denon 1910. After reading many reviews I am leaning towards the Onkyo. The only thing that concerns me is the fact the Onkyo can only upscale to 1080i against the Denons 1080p. Would this be a major issue for me currently running Sky HD, PS3, and Panasonic BD60 Bluray player thru Panasonic 46PZ81 1080p tv all via HDMI. I would also welcome any comments on these two amps.

In answer to your question (

), no, don't let the upscaling of the amps decide which one you should go for - the only place where it might be beneficial would be for the SD channels on the Sky HD box, but even then, I'd wager your TV would produce superior results anyway.

Go by whichever you prefer soundwise as that's the amp's main job.

I have an Onkyo 607 which I would heartily recommend. If you have a liking for big, powerful soundtracks then this amp excels. Its also well featured and well priced however like always try and demo first

The onkyo will have a different tonal sound to your Yamaha so it would be best to demo the Onkyo. The Denon will be more in line with the sound from the Yamaha. If you are using speakers that have a bright tonal nature, it would again be best to demo the Onkyo before buying

Setting this up using the microphone is a very simple affair, takes about 20 minutes or so with my 605.

Well, I disagree! I think there is a quite distinct difference between Yamaha and Denon.

Yamaha is warm and maybe a little dark in the sound whereas Denon is usually more bright and with some speakers even a bit harsh in the sound.

But as already said you really need to audition. This is the only way to determine which sound you prefer.

What I was trying to say (and maybe should have said it better) is that there will be a more significant difference between the Yamaha and the Onkyo than there will between the Yamaha and the Denon. Both Yamaha and Denon are in the 'warm' camp and 'Onkyo in the 'bright' camp..

I tried set up with the Audessy mic however after experimenting with my own settings preferred them. The main difference was increasing the output for the centre channel as dialogue wasn't loud enough. It's an easy process with the on screen display. Let us know what amp you decide upon Bernie

Bernie,

I have demo'd both straight after each other, and if your using it for stereo use too, I would recommend the Denon to be the better choice. The Onkyo sounded 'thrashy' and uncontrolled compared to the 1910, yet was ok for movies......if a little heavy handed with the bass.

Alternatively, demo the Denon 2310 after both the 607 and 1910, and see that spending more really makes a big difference!!

Hope that helps.....
