Hi Clare,
That's the clearest answer I've seen on the 605 'upconversion'. There is much confusion out on the web on this point. I'm considering buying the 605 and have been trying to get to the bottom of this feature. The manual and specs just state 'upconversion' of component (and other analog) to HDMI. After much research this is what I think the 605 provides, I would be most grateful if you could confirm (or correct) my understanding:
1. HDMI input will just pass through unchanged to HDMI output and will support all progressive and interlaced formats in common use today (486i, 576i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p)
2. Component (and other analog) inputs can be upconverted to HDMI outputs. This will at most de-interlace and will not change the resolution. Examples: 576i component in -> 576p HDMI out (my intended use with an old Sony DVD player).
3. There is talk of a secret option to upscale to 720p (e.g. feed in 576i on component and output 720p on HDMI). This is clearly not supported by Onkyo. This often causes confusion, I've seen many posts claiming this as a feature of the 605 - like its there in the manual. In my opinion upsupported features are misleading - I want to use products as intended by the manufacturer, not experimental/test features.
4. Being new to this field I'd like to confirm my understanding of the follwing terms:
a) Upconversion: Changing the format of the signal, e.g. analog to digital, and possibly de-interlacing to progressive.
b) Upscaling: Increasing the resolution of the image by interpolation / digital processing.
