Im about to buy my first home cinema receiver and speaker package but before i buy, i would like some advice on the receivers listed above. I am going to be pairing either one of those with the Q Accoustics 1010i speaker package and it will be mainly used for watching movies.

Please can someone give me some advice to help me decide which of those three will be my best option??

Many Thanks

Andy

One isn't out yet, one has only just hit the streets and the other is a firm favourite of WHF but you can't get them for love nor money! Good luck! Is there a particular feature e.g. number of inputs that you're looking for? One of the Yamahas would be my pick but as I said until you line them up and give them a proper audible comparison and not just based on paper specs, it's hard to say.

I know, its been a nightmare trying to source a receiver as of late; i found a company on the web called Quantum Electronics so i called them up for a bit of advice. I originally wanted the Onkyo 606; they do have one, but only in silver (and the rest of my setup is black); the guy on the phone was very helpful and advised me to go for one of the above but he did say that he hasnt heard any of the newer models himself yet and that he will have them both in stock within the next couple of weeks. The Yamaha ax763 has put me off slighly because it only has 2 HDMI inputs, which limits long term practicality. The guy at quantum did say that the onkyo would be best for movies however, and that is what I will be using it for mainly.

I wont be visiting the shop as it is in Wales and I am in the North East, so I will be buying via mail order; this is why I require advice before I part with around £800; I am pretty sure that whatever I buy will sound awesome because the only systems I have had in the past have been dvd home cinema in a box.

I have bought gear from Quantum so I can highly recommend them. I would wait for the reviews and owners opinions. It's a shame you can't demo to appreciate the differences for yourself. You should be able to download online manuals etc. to get a feel for their setup. The Yamahas are meant to be very easy to setup but the auto-calibration has been commented to be out and manual tweaks are required.

Thats good to know about Quantum and I really appreciate your advice; if i can force myself to be patient then ill wait for reviews before I buy ... no doubt, ill take the risk (and f**k it up, knowing my luck) Lol.

Out of interest; which of the Yamaha's were you refering to when you said "I know what I would go for" ???

The new Yamaha is just round the corner - 4 HDMI inputs, 1080P video upscaling and priced in line with the current 763. The Onkyo's look very good as well and once again are due very soon. I would wait two weeks if you can.

Yeah, I dont mind waiting a couple of weeks to be honest if it means making the right decision; what kind of deal would you be able to give me, pairing either with the Q Accoustics 1010's (or similar) ???

Can i contact you to discuss??

Regards

Andy

Thanks Nick, I did speak with your colleague Daniel who was very helpful and provided me with a quote of £810 for the Onkyo SR577 and Q Accoustic 1010's with a pair of wall brackets and all necessary speaker cable; however, Quantum Electronics have offered me the same deal for £775 so I obviously went with the cheaper quote in the end.

But I am happy to say that I have placed my order and my new bit of kit should arrive within the next couple of weeks ... Happy Days - Can't Wait!
