My son recently sent his Onkyo 577 sent of to be repaired under warranty. The company who's repairing it said that the HDMI board needs replacing (which they are going ahead with).

My question is.......... Can a board be damaged due to switching off at the mains each night after powering down of course? He (son ) asked me if it's possible that was the cause.

Any comments please?

See no reason why this should cause such damage.

Cheers Andrew. Strange the board should go so quick, the unit's only 11 months old

What could have caused it do you think?

Well I have heard it said several times that you should not plug/unplug hdmi cables with any either end equipment powered on because it can cause damage to any hdmi board?

Its probably common practice just to plug and un plug with no regard for the power?
I know that I have done it a few times.

Yes i understand that, but the question is whether it's ok to turn off
from the mains plug not attach component leads when power on, if thats
what you mean

Well I was just suggesting a reason why the board may have been damaged.

I was not referring to the mains switching on and off as to if that had caused it.

However I have just installed one of these smart mains extenstions that when you switch the TV off it cuts the power to all the over kit you have plugged in.
So nothing left in standby that you don't want.

Works a treat, but if there is more wear and tear on the kit by switching from mains off to mains on all the time I might re-consider it.

Hi didgriffin

Sorry if my reply sounded a bit curt, it wasn't meant to be, but thanks anyway

OneClick Intellipanel's a good option - only £20 or so, and they work well: includes useful always-on socket for Sky boxes etc that have to stay on standby. We tested it back in 2007; it got a five-star review, but I can't seem to find it in our online archive!

I'd still suggest you put everything into standby before you turn off the TV, thus killing the power to the rest of the system. Suddenly going from fully powered up to no power would, I suggest, be less than ideal for some components' longevity.

Hi piobob,

Just a quick question.

How did your son discover that the hdmi board damaged?

Did the company discover this while repairing the unit over another fault?

Or did your son have problems with degradation of audio/visual aspects of the unit?

I'm very interested as I've inadvertently disconnected hdmi leads when units at either end were powered on.

It's got me thinking if I have the same problem with my equipment

Hope to hear from you. Cheers

Is that the exact same one that you reviewed?

I noticed there are a few on the web that are different.

I agree with that Andrew

I've advised him the same

Hi

It was diagnosed while in for repair. There was a Buzz type
noise then went off. The company picked it up and said the HDMI board
had gone. I asked why they thought it had gone and the reply was
"sometimes it happens" lol
He's got it back now and all is well(not bad service) Although he's treating it like a new born baby lol

Hi piobob ,

Thanks for the quick response.

I can appreciate your son being so careful.

Makes you wonder : the sophistication of these devices yet the same old problem of reliability and longevity!!!!

Well my Onkyo uses viera link with the tv.
So when the tv is set to standby the onkyo goes into standby as well, then a few seconds later the power is turned off.
So everything else is usually already in standby except for my Sky+HD which uses one of the selectable sockets to remain powered.

Yes it's a worry, AV gear is expensive to repair out of warranty. Seriously thinking of extending mine with D&G or someone

i know a lot of people have had no problems with onkyo amps, i got a refurb 905 in jan 09 it went wrong in june-july sent to genserve had hdmi board replaced with other parts. seems the hdmi board is on it way out again as when i turn it on it takes about 20min before i get a picture on screen.
the thing is as this amp was a refurb it would have been repaired a least once before i got it, so to have to be repaired 3 times in a year there must be something wrong with amp that is making keep breaking down, & warranty runs out jan. sent an email to genserve & exceptional av last week about my problem with this amp & that i have very little faith left in it to last after to. no reply so will ring monday, to see what they have to say.
would love to know how others would deal with this issue & what i could expect from them.

Hi, I have an Onkyo 905 and I had my HDMI pcb replaced within 2 months and it was always left in standby. It went back again 2 months later. But it sounds fabulous with my B & W 685 theatre even the wife approves!!

Good luck

My son is worrying that it might go again, I suggested that if it did we would ask for a new one from the supplier, but in your case a refurb might be a bit more difficult to do this

Perhaps others (a lawyer maybe) will have a say
