If you have your front speakers bi amp'd as i do can you still get 7.1 by stuffing a 2 channel power amp on the surround back pre outs????? or does setting the bi amp setting in the menue alter the pre outs too???

My guess is that the preout would follow whatever the relevant internal amp was assigned to do. If you have the amp try it and see.

Assuming it doesn't work you could set up as 7.1 and use the internal front L and R amps drive the tweeters and your external power amp the bass. This will usually sound bad though as the amps really should be identical.

I suspect you really need 2 external power amps if you want to biamp properly.
