Hi to everyone.
I need some advice on the best way to set up my system. I have just gone a bought a Onkyo 606 receiver and a set of Kef 1005.2 speakers. In addition to this I have a Samsung LE40A656, PS3, SkyHD, Xbox360, Archos 704 with DVR station and a optical audio switch (3inputs – 1 output). All use HDMI except the Xbox360 (still on my first release one) and the Archos DVR which use component connections.

Anyway I am a little confused as to the best way to set this all up. First thing I did was connect the Onkyo’s HDMI out to HDMI1 of my TV, now I can see the setup screen for the Onkyo (that was the easy nit). The PS3 and SkyHD HDMI outputs were connected to the Onkyo HDMI inputs along with the Optical audio outs (Using toslink) to 2 of the three inputs on the optical audio switch. The Xbox360 video (component) connected to the component input on the Onkyo along with the optical audio connected to the 3rd input on the optical audio switch. The output on the optical audio switch was then plugged into the optical audio input 1 on the Onkyo.

Are you keeping up???

Next my Archos DVR station was connected to the second component input on the Onkyo and the audio output which uses the phono type optical connection going to the Onkyo, Next the Onkyo component out going to the component input on the TV.

Think that’s everything. Anyway now to the question, have I gone overkill on the connections?

As audio is transmited by HDMI do I need the optical connections for the PS3 to be able to have the HD audio formats sent to the Onkyo, can I still get dolby from the SkyHD via the HDMI or does that need the optical connection as well?

Also while watching BBC HD I was getting a lot of breakup in the picture / audio while connected through the Onkyo.

Any Advice would be most welcome.
Thanks.

The Sky HD needs HDMI and optical link, and setting up in menu for Dolby D output. The PS3 only needs Hdmi connected.

marineman is right, you don't need an optical connection from your PS3 to the Onk since the 606 can accept LPCM (so remember to set your PS3 to output Linear PCM via HDMI - this is the only way to get DTS-HD etc. to your receiver, since the PS3 can't bitstream HD audio via HDMI). Using an optical cable will not enable you to get HD audio either, so you needn't bother with this connection here.

Sky HD, however, does need an optical connection since it can only send stereo sound signals via HDMI. As marineman says, make sure your box is set to output Dolby Digital via optical.

It looks like this means you won't really need that optical switch - just connect Sky HD to OPT1 and the Xbox to OPT2.
