Onkyo 606 Now or Wait?

Hi to all on the last day of our good weather. I am sitting here pondering whether I should go for the 'Onkyo 606' or whether I should wait it out till the likes of Denon and Yamaha challenge it in a few months time? I am doubting they will be able to match the price straight away either. As I now have the funds to be able to get one and I have seen a good deal for 399 pounds with 2 free hdmi cables. Now i know it isn't as adept at playing the music side of things but surely it doesn't sound pants and is listenable? Any advice from the pro's at WHF or any one else who has a '606' and can give me advice on what it is like and if they regret not waiting. Much Appreciated in advance. Paul

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 606.

But as to what the forthcoming products will sound like, who knows? We haven't heard any of them yet.

Thanks for the usual timely reply Andrew.
Yes I know you have not reviewed them yet, but what I was saying is that they probably won't be the same price on introduction as the onkyo is at 399 pounds. They will have to go some too to beat it's all round value and spec at the price too although they could probably come up with a better facia to their recievers blindfolded, lol.

Judging from other posts on this forum, at least one rival - though not offering upscaling - could be significantly less expensive.

I am afraid I will most likely need the upscaling though so that is a big bonus that the onkyo offers. Plus I would be getting two free hdmi cables in the bundle too.

The receiver Andrew was intimating at is the new Sony I believe? It can be pre-ordered for £250 at the moment and offers 4 hdmi and HD audio. The bigger brother of this offers upscaling also. In the States it retails at $600 so I don't think it will be too far off the £400 mark over here. They are quite compact as well and fairly lightweight (8-10kg). My 2 year old Sony weighs 15kg.

Thanks Gerrard, that is a very tempting Reciever to look out for although now after that I don't know what to do, lol.
If that Sony sounds even better than the 1200es model which was so highly rated then I will be very tempted to get it. Are you thinking of getting one then?

I had a quick look and is this the one's you mean?
All three models support 1080p with 60p/24p fps and can upscale video to 1080p via HDMI. The STR-DA5300ES arrives in the US in September ($1,700), the STR-DA4300 in October ($1,300) and the STR-DA3300ES in August ($1,000). Sony hasn't released any UK arrival olr pricing yet.

Hi, I saw the '10% Off Offer' which a member kindly displayed on the site and I just couldn't resist the temptation of the 'Onkyo 606' for 359.99 Pounds. So I have purchased one.
Gerrard do you know where the Sony STR-DA2400ES fits in to the above - is this the replacement for the 1200es?
Not sure, but the 5300ES and 3300ES mentioned above have been available for yonks - they were launched last Summer.

We're due both info and kit from Sony on the receiver side of things - as early as next week, I believe (though don't hold me to that - I believe we'll get Sony kit when we see it!)

If not, i'll be flexing the WHF credit card again, just as we did with the Onkyo, so we can bring you a review. I know Sony has been desparate to get back in the UK receiver race - after all, it was only 2 years ago it won Product of the Year....

...and the year before that, Denon did almost a clean sweep in that category, with Yamaha dominant the year before that.

All exciting stuff, and as i've said before, with new models from all of the above - plus Pioneer, Marantz and others - we're looking forward to some seriously competitive receiver Group Tests this summer.

As I said, getting either definitive info or products out of Sony is like pulling the proverbial teeth! But we are due both updates and kit imminently, so we'll let you know ASAP - and again, as mentioned, if we have to buy it to test it we will.

We're aware of the receivers being advertised by play.com and others, and we will be attempting to get these products for review, even though Sony UK hasn't as yet made any official press announcement concerning their availability.

good stuff! I think the 920 is the one most will want to see a test on as it has the upscaling like the onkyo 606.

If, of course, Sony decides to bring it into the UK.

Just because it's available in the US, doesn't automatically mean it'll be a European/UK model, especially as it would seem to overlap with the spec of the STR-DA2400ES I've seen on those sites running US specs.
The 2400 has pre-outs (which I need) and the others don't. Looks like I am now waiting for the new Denons and the 2400ES.

It's at www.exceptional-av.co.uk and you have to put the code 'huge' in at the checkout stage. Put the offer in again here as attempts to merge earlier threads seem to have deleted them, due to various nonsense going on here in development hell.

You can buy children now in Guildford? It's becoming even more of a consumer mecca!

But seriously, having checked with one of my contacts within Sony, I got an email saying he's in Tokyo and has just finished doing the UK tuning on the 820. So maybe units in the shops next week is a bit optimistic...
