neil fd2:My A400 is lying gathering dust since i loaned it to someone who returned it down on one channel. Took it apart & the cicuit board for the left channel in the volume pot is cracked. Must have been dropped. Anyone know where i can get a volume pot? It sounds too good just to bin it.

try this company neil:

formerly known as SEME, Nedis stock a wide range of spare parts for many makes and models. i checked the stuff available for the A400 - they had something listed as the "volume control" but im not sure if thats what you want a i would have called it a potentiometer... email them and see...

dim_span:would love to get an A400 GTE (an A400 whhich was modified by Ken Evans) ... he no longer does the mods .... I scan ebay daily for one ... missed one a few weeks back on ebay ... was too late to bid but will keep trying ... have never herad one though and am going by what people say who own one

the GTE is great - i picked mine up from ebay for a princely sum of £85!!! i immediately noticed an improvement over my stock A400. since then ive modded it quite a lot and reaped huge sonic rewards from doing so. get one if you can - you'll love it im sure!

Hi All

If you wanted to use the latest CD player and Speaker combination, with the Pioneer A-400, what would it be?

All the Arcam sources ive used have complimented the A400 but i dont use modern speakers so thats all i can add.

you have the GTE version and still done additional mods? ,,,, just out of curiosity, what were the mods and how vast were the improvements .... and obviously the cost of the additional mods?

hi dim, so far i have replaced the captive mains lead with a quality aftermarket lead (£45), replaced the PSU smoothing capacitors (£25), removed all the existing RCA terminals and installed a pair of quality silver plated ones, replaced all internal wiring with solid silver wire (£25), and removed the input selector relay and hardwired the one input using solid silver wire (£3).
without any doubt this is now a very special amp and the small outlay in time and money i have spent on these mods have been repayed a hundred fold with the improvement in sound quality.
the most noticeable improvement is the level of detail now being reproduced. replacing the caps has added depth to the bottom end and overall clarity is much improved.
next in line are the speaker terminals, and then i will look at the resistors and capacitors that are directly in the signal path.

Hi Kiwi, sorry but I havent compared those two amps but I did test an unmoddified A400 against a few modern amps around the £600-800 mark not long ago and it held its own against most of the competition. It was bettered by some of the amps but only in certain areas and only just so certainly no disgrace considering its age and original RRP.

Just for reference, A400 is the European version of Pioneer UK3.

http://audio-heritage.jp/PIONEER-EXCLUSIVE/amp/a-uk3.html

Althought Pionner A400's success in UK, Pioneer UK3 (actually the same amp) was not the best selling in its price range in Japan.

Didn't know that....interesting.

Strange that they dispensed with the IEC socket and the ALPS blue velvet volume pot on the UK version.

EDIT : This reads as if it was a further development of the A400 http://audio-database.com/PIONEER-EXCLUSIVE/amp/a-uk3-e.html

AT first glance the PCB layout of the two amps looks similar. However, the closer I look I can see that they are actually very different in terms of components used (A400 has a much higher number of electrolytic caps used). Who knows how much these differences impacted on the sound of the UK3 and its resultant sales or lack thereof...?

For what its worth, the A300 uses the same PCB as the A400, though some different components are used resulting in a decreased output wattage and from all reports a distinctly different sound.

I wish the A400 had an IEC socket and the ALPS pot, as it is I have to hard wire an aftermarket mains lead into the amp.

I reckon A300 has a correlation to Pioneer UK1.

Just wondering what is stopping you from fitting an IEC socket ?

Fitting an IEC socket was an option but i wanted as few "links in the chain" as possible.

That UK3 in the Japanese link is the A400x
Yes that's right.. And not to be confused with the A400. The A400 relies upon an earth/ground to deliver results. The A400X/UK3 doesn't need earth so could be sold in more countries and wasn't as well reviewed. Totally different internal design.
