How does the performance of a vintage Technics SL1600 compare to modern turntables?
I have just inherited one with a Stanton 500 EEE cartridge and am wondering if it worth bothering with!

well Technics have been making turntables for over 40 years and have recently brought back one of the classics the Technics SL-1200 so in my opinion you should bother with the SL1600, the only thing that may need changing is the stylus (needle) but a quick search shows replacements still available, use the money saved to buy some vinyl.

If it’s in good nick then I’m sure it’ll still be very competitive. I’d also advise caution about an old cartridge, unless you know the stylus is sound.

The beauty of the detachable headshell is the ease of changing cartridges too.

it came to me with a new stylus in a sealed package, also an Ortofon OM 30, the integral headache type, a shure cartridge balance and an alignment protractor.
I now need to find out about lubricating the spindle!

That sounds like a fantastic package. Those headshell shaped Ortofon’s make me nostalgic for the Concorde!
