Old system finally failed - where to start?

Hi

My old EPOS 11's are finally giving up, one of them has a distinct rattle/distortion that sounds like the main unit voice coil vibrating or catching that just appeared (but not on all music yet)., Have swapped everything around and it's definitely the speaker, not amp or souyrce.

I have been out of this game for a long time now so I really need some advice on where to start!

My system is an Inca Tech Claymore (over 20 years old), the EPOS 11's, nearly 20 years old, a Linn Axis with Goldring 1022GX and a Marantz 67SE CD player. Speaker cables are audioquest Indigo 2 bi-wired again probably 10-15 years old, but seemed pretty good at the time.

I don't intend to change the sources but I need to get some new speakers and I suspect the cCaymore may be getting past it's sell by date.

My problem is, I have no idea what price bracket to start in. I am looking for amp/speaker at least as good, probably somwhat better. Speakers need to be about the same size as the EPOS or no larger.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Steve

Wow I was still saying 'euurrr, yuck, GIRRLLS' when you bought your hifi system!.

No idea about the amp, no idea about the speakers. But I reckon it's time to replace both. This is going to need matching with your old sources though so I'd advise dragging them along to a hifi shop and listening to some different setups.

Your budget decides everything, when you say you don't know how much to spend - you just want better or equal to what you had you must still have a rough figure in mind because the price of hifi goes from cheap tacky rubbish to good budget stuff through high end kit all the way to YOU'RE MENTALLY ILL.

I'm going to start you off with a guessed figure (because I have no idea about your kit) of £800 for a replacement amplifier and speakers. For that money, being a MA/Audiolab whore, I would invest in an audiolab 8000S (circa £300) and a pair of Monitor Audio RS5's (circa £450). I'd hope for a not-too-bright-sounding source to go with those. Head to a dealer and find out!

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions, oddly enough almost exactly the same price as when I first got them! and similar to what was auditioned too (though was audiolab 8000A in those days). Another similar amp was Cyrus 1.

I can probably afford close to £2000 altogether so starting around the £1000 mark for the pair seems a good idea

Cheers
