Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

Your description sounds logical to me - tweeter could short circuit crossover, which could then short circuit the amp’s circuit. Sounds like Hifi components don’t necessarily have safety mechanisms such as fuses on their circuits?
Indeed, some amps have better protection than others.
Nothing wrong with experimenting but better not use with your expensive amplifier 🙂

Haha, no. But it must be hard to short a speaker or crossover? You’d have to blow the resistance while also maintaining the electrical connection, right?

Yes 100% safe without the electrical connection 🙂
All of what you say is correct.
Difficult yes but the risk is there, resistors can burn out.
Airing some caution is prudent but if you think I'm misinformed, I don't mind if I'm proved wrong.
What matters is what you get out of it.
Nice one 😄
