I'm looking to buy a 40-inch LCD TV and I know that there was a monster test on 40-inchers in the November issue.

Is there an online summary of the outcome... or can anyone just blurt out the answer please ?

Much obliged

Hi Claire,

thanks for the speedy response :)

I realise now that it was the Nov issue in any case, but my budget is around £1k, which brings a lot of good kit within range during the sales.

One that stands out is the Samsung LE40F86BD but a couple of questions spring to mind:

1. Is there a TV that has the F86 beaten during your Nov issue review?

2. Is it worth the extra $$$ over the M86 or M87 machines it replaces (without the 100Hz Motion-Plus).

A 42-inch TV would be absolutely fine too ... however I'd not like to drop to 37-inches.

Thanks Claire

Cheers

The Samsung looks good - but we've only tested the 46in version of the 'F' range, so can't categorically say the 40in will be as excellent. But i've seen the 40in in action and it look a great set - the 'F' tweaks seem to make a difference over the 'M' predecessors (which aren't bad themselves!)

But with £1000 budget, i'd also point you in the direction of the Panasonic plasmas - second favourite in that November Supertest to our TV product of the year, the Pioneer Kuro PDP-428XD (sadly outside your price range).

If you shop around, you can get the full HD Panasonic TH-42PZ70 for £999 - a superb set, which will offer better contrast, motion-handling and black-rendering than the LCD alternatives.

Clare,

I couldn't ignore the reviews the Pioneer PDP428XD has been receiving, so I've stretched the budget and gone for it.

Hi Clare,

Having had a scan through a number of reviews you really seem to have you finger on the pulse of any number of issues and I could do with your help on flat screens. Simply I want to get the best all round performing 40 inch-ish for my money and because it is tied up in vouchers I have to buy from Currys.

There are 3 contenders I in the running, the Samsung LE40F86BD, the Sony KDL40V3000 and the Panasonic TH42PZ70B. I read the November What Hi-Fi but the Sony and the Samsung were released a little late for the review.

Hope you can help.

Thanks

Jon
