Till he changes his mind....*stop*

We used to refer to one of his big selling albums as "No talent required".

But then we also referred to one of Nigel Kennedy's nastier recordings as Vivaldi's "Quattro formaggio".

Last summer Bjorn Again played in Kew Gardens during their 5 day music festival.

We live on the river directly opposite the northern part of Kew Gardens where the concerts are held. We sat on the riverbank about 50 yds from our apartment with a bottle of prosecco and listened to the concert. The stage would have been 200-300 yards away across the river but we could hear fine, well enough to sing along anyway.

Yeah, Abba over Phil Collins every time.

It wasn't always like that. I remember Live Aid when the man - with the assistance of police escorts, helicopters and Concorde - (an almost superhuman effort) tirelessly ensured the USA got as much exposure to the pain as we did!

I don't understand all the bad feeling about Phil Collins. He produced some wonderful music with Genesis, even after Gabriel left. Wind & Wuthering, for example, is a superb album with some great drumming and vocals from Collins.

His solo work is patchier, but there are some fine songs amongst those albums and I agree with David Crosby that Collins achieves one of the most difficult things of all - writing pop music that has some meaning.

yeah i dont really have any beef with his stuff - not a massive fan either, if its on the radio ill listen. The softer luvvy duvy stuff im not so keen on mind. As far as pop music goes its light years ahead of the sh**** this current generation are subjected to!

I was duped into attending a gig at Wembley (Invisible Touch tour in 86) and quite frankly it was the most boring concert I've ever attended. Add into the mix their support was Paul Young and it was without doubt the most miserable experience.

Yeah, it's not something I've ever admitted in public before but I quite like him! Not to the point where I actually own anything he's ever made (obvs) but I suspect it's only a matter of time before I stumble across something for 50p in a boot sale and I can't say no...

Anybody who is successful gets an unfair number of detractors, and there is also the fact that most big names in music have tended to take attention away from their best output with the solid but unexceptional output of their later years. This can be said of many, including Collins, Elton John, Sting, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney... The list goes on and on.

Of all the carp to come out of 'prog rock', genesis were, quite possibly, the most irritating. Musically constipated and so far up their own backsides that they thought dressing Gabriel up as a flower was art.

Collins is a mediocre singer and competent drummer who got lucky, as so many did. He then used his financial clout to forge a solo career that was way beyond anything his talent deserved.

All 'in my opinion' of course, but you can trust me on this, honestly...*wacko*

I think that that was Gabriel's own idea? Funny how Gabriel doesn't get the slagging. I think that too many people take too much notice of the image, and don't actually listen to the music. For me, Collins is a fantastic drummer. Just listen to 'Cinema Show', towards the end there is some wonderfully delicate drumming. If folks don't like certain types of music, fair enough, but talent? It matters not to me, after all, I've seen it said that Victoria Beckham has lots of talent, maybe folks prefer that? Music isn't, or shouldn't be a popularity contest. Listen to it, then like/don't like it, end of AFAIC.

I agree about the drumming. Pity he had to sing along!

I see it slightly different. I happen to think he's a great singer, just doesn't have a great voice *smile*

Lighten up, it's not meant to be a serious critique, just a bit of 'banter'.

Though to be serious for a moment, I have no time for Genesis, Collins, Gabriel et al, (and Yes, Jethro Tull and half a dozen others of the genre) I find them all intensely irritating.....*unknw*

But then I am talking as someone who considers the Grateful Dead to be the greatest rock band of all time, so what do I know?

Did my training this morning to back to back versions of Dark Star, both taken from the Europe '72 albums. Mad as a box of frogs I might be, but I know what I like and saturdays gym session will be done to some electric Miles Davis, I'm checking out the recordings he did with Marcus Miller, so maybe Amandala.

I quite like the track 'Turn It On Again', that's about it, though I did hear a track from 'From Genesis To Revelation' which sounded interesting.

I used to hate PC, but having been subjected to Kiss FM on occasions at work, in comparison, he's truly wonderful.

Sorry Dave, it's just that when I see hugely successful artists getting slagged off because of how they are perceived, I find it a bit irritating, especially in the case of Phil Collins. I've quite often seen it said that Collins "ruined" Genesis, yet one has only to look at the writer credits to see that that can't possibly be true. For me, he's an accomplished musician, and record sales seem to bear this out. Of course, it's horses for courses, and some will no doubt prefer the talents of the Spice Girls *scratch_one-s_head*

I suppose I should check out the 'dead', just that US rock bands never really did it for me.

Not big fan of genesis - just a few tracks - Musical Box from Nursery Crymes - a classic for one

As a solo artist Peter Gabriel has produced some amazing work. Great musician (inmho of course). Streets ahead of Phil. But Phil has been very clever in progressing his career as a solo artist.

cheers tonky

I agree totally. For me most of Collins solo work is pretty bland, with some notable exceptions. Gabriel was always the more creative.
