Noise Cancelling Headphones Question

Hi, i just bought the sennheiser PXC 310 noise cancelling headphones based on the What Hifi reviews. First pair I have had but noise cancelling seems pretty good, just had a quick question - when listening to my i pod and activating noise cancelling, the i pod seems to go much quieter and a hiss is produced as well. I then have to turn the i pod volume up to hear at the same levels as without noise cancelling. Is this normal? I just thought the idea with noise cancelling was you would be able to listen without turning up the volume to protect your ears

Sounds normal to me and just the electronic algorithms kicking in.

Never heard the Sennheiser, but doesn't happen with my Bose QC15 & Goldring NS1000.

Ok thanks for the info - just having to turn the i pod up to max to hear it on the train etc when noise cancelling is on, just wasn't sure if that was right
