No hd sound through my amp

hi all,

I recently had sky HD installed which is great and all was working well for 3 weeks then i got no sound through my amp on HD channels only,everything else on other channels was great.

I had a optical cable(toslink)going from my sky box to the amp.It was working ok.

I tried anothertoslink cable again no joy with the HD sound.

So................i swapped it for a coax cable and no problem at all.

unfortunately the other coax is for cd so i need to change the assignment for it,unfortunatly i have lost the cable for the on screen display for my denon amp!

Has anyone else had similiar issues with there hd boxes?

Sounds like either the Sky+HD optical sender has failed, or the optical receiver in the Denon. Either that or a setting has changed, so the receiver is no longer set to go to the optical input.

Well engineer came out and said the Sky box was fine,so maybe the denon is at fault.

although all seems to work well the the co-ax cable,plus not sure i can afford to replace amp with another.

Settings should be ok as i checked them already.

Well, you'd be able to tell if the box optical out is OK, as there'll be red light coming out of the optical digital socket - though of course that only guarantees that the optical sender is working, not whether it's carrying any signal...

How did the "engineer" come to the conclusion the box wasn't at fault?

Because they have no means of testing the optical output, other than trying another box, or checking for the red light which as Andrew has pointed out is no guarantee a signal is present!

Well he said as far as he was concerned the sound was working through the tv,which is no good to me.No point in having hd really,have just been looking at a denon av amp on richer sounds ,retails at £250,not bad i thought.

i will carry on nvestigating though.

If there is a spare optical input on the amp try connecting the SkyHD box to that.

Update!

Yes i used another optical port on the denon amp and all is working fine now.

To be fair my amp is pretty old-so maybe its on its way out.

Its Denon 2803,discontinued so i hear.
