Hi all I've Just joined up, what a great site! I've just treated myself to the kit listed below but have a wee issue I'd like some expert advice on if possible. When I connect my old grundig DVD player to the Onkyo via S-video and Digital/Coax for audio, I get some really nice surround sounds but no video out on HDMI (apart from a plain blue screen). The Onkyo manual (page 22) contradicts with itself (page 24) about whether or not this up-conversion or whatever it's called can be done. Interestingly, it WILL convert to HDMI when you input it via the game/tv input, albeit with a pretty poor quality resultant picture. In the meantime I'm connecting video direct to the LCD and am quite pleased with the results, but would like to resolve this for my own edification. PANASONIC 37LZD80 ONKYO 606 MS-ALUMNI 5.1 PACKAGE Thanks in advance! Adam

The DVD input on the Onkyo is set as default to Component Video in as a non-HDMI default. You need to go into the set-up (see manual, page 44) and set this to '----'. Then you should get upscaling from the S-video input on DVD, but as you say, it'll look pretty shonky.

I'd stick to a straight video connection from DVD player to TV until you can afford a better player.

Nice incusive post Andrew. A smattering of Australian slang (shonky) is always a nice touch.

Wow that was a swift reply thanks!

Alas I've already tried that setting in the menu but to no avail. I'm wondering if I have a faulty unit :( I'll take it up with the place I bought it from and get them to help me with some diagnoses.

As for the player I'm really only waiting on things to improve a little wrt disc/player compatibility, and also want something that will allow me to take advantage of the latest and greatest DTS/Dolby formats. The dilemma is, I'm toying with the idea of putting together a new 'media' PC instead..

Thanks again,
Adam

Ahahaa

On the hardware setup menu, the HDMI 'zoom' option was set to 'full'. Setting it to 'normal' seems to cure it.
Experimenting with the output resolutions, but the 'through' option seems to give the best results picture-wise at the expense of resolution and interlacing mode.

As you were :)
