Hello,

An inaugural post, so please bear with me.

I have a Sony BDP 760, a Sony 3500ES receiver, a Sony Monolith LCD display (getting a common thread here) and an issue.

Specifically, I have circa 1700 DVD’s and Blu-ray’s which have rather begun to dominate the lounge in two huge cases.

So, I want to “rip” the films to a storage medium and be able to select and play films from the TV screen.

I have built a powerful computer in readiness for the ripping process (any software tool suggestion gladly received) and extended my LAN to the rear of the TV.

So, I would guess at 4-5 Terra for NAS storage and an ability to select the title from an index would be perfect.

Can anyone shed any light on the NAS (or similar) devices, cost and software tools I would need?

I appreciate that my collection is not that great, but I would rather do it once, right. So if I can select the right format to rip, the right technology to store and present it one, all my boxes would be ticked.

Thanks in advance,

Neil

After some digging I think an 8 terra NAS (Buffalo) and something like Pavtube Blu-Ray Ripper writing as disk clone.

Any suggestions on a media server to interface the NAS to the Amp/TV?

Welcome. Depending on how profilic your disc ripping will be, I don't think 4-5TB will be enough unless you settle for low quality rips (in which case you're at the wrong site >) ). A lossless dvd rip generally takes 4-6GB per disc, BR rips can be anywhere between 5 and 15GB. You'd need at least 7TB to store it all :help:

Given that data volume, I'd go for a 4- or 5-bay NAS like this, or possibly this. The latter is a business model, so higher performance and higher price; you don't need high performance for streaming movies, but if you plan to do a lot of editing of the files on-server you may notice the difference. Add a number of large disks (2 or 3TB) to taste. I don't know UK prices, but I'd expect to be looking at 800 euro for the hardware.

Software-wise, I'd go for Twonkymedia on the nas, check beforehand if it's available for your chosen flavour. Last time I checked, it was embarrassingly cheap (something like €5). I have no experience with bluray-ripping software, but I know Anydvd HD has a large fanbase.

Hi tremon,

Really appreciate the reply.

I did the maths last night and came up with a similar volume size, not good.

I plan to store "as is" so the quality in image and audio will be preserved.

I experimented with a couple of tools to convert to digital yesterday and getting around 18 minutes per Blu-Ray, doing a direct clone.

So, a NAS around 8 Terra with room to grow is fine and I have a 200 Mbs link to the cabinet.

All I need to do now is investigate and package to plug into a spare HDMI on the receiver and trawl through the media catalogue, and of course, then save up the money.

Cheers,

Neil
