Hi, i should soon have some money to spend on upgrading / replacing some speakers i was given by a friend, they would be for use with a 50w pioneer precision amp from around 10 years ago but that could be upgraded in the future. i am looking for a speaker for an average sized room that can be turned up when it needs to be and really shake the foundations when watching films or listening to anything with a good bassline ( i listen to a lot of dub and dubstep so a full low end is important to me) i dont mind buying second hand, and idealy could do with something that is almost impossible to blow, however i have a feeling i am expecting too much of my money.....

ear:what you need is a subwoofer ..or two.

one or 2 subwoofers + some speakers for £500 ? i think not, prove me wrong 🙂

Q Acoustics 1050i or the successor, the 2050. Huge speaker for the money, good writeups, hopefully the 2050 will better it.

EDIT: The 1050i can now be had for £229, the SRP for the 2050 is £370 or so. Incidentally, the 1050i won Hi Fi World's product of the year last year.

for that kind of music i wouldnt spend 500..with the fear to damage speakers at loud levels.

Monitor Audio RS6 - the RS6's don't exactly shake the foundations, but allied with a blockbuster film they produce a realism that's hard to beat for the money. Nay, damn impossible given the extra discounts available on all Silver range. The added bonus is they have a sensitivity of 91db, so very easy when driving a 50 watt amp. You could add a sub at a later date should you have the urge.

They are available for around £400 mark, well within your budget, I'd say.

.....Ok specifically for your taste in music (purists look away now) howzabout a pair of Cerwin Vegas? the Cerwin Vega CLS-10's are priced at £487.00 with 90db sensitivity (i.e. any amp will just about rock the neighbourhood) complete with a "high excursion" 10" woofer. The 3 way Vegas are famed for going as loud as your neighbours will allow (or not) they are fuse protected as well.

Generally there are a few to be had on Ebay - but beware thrashed ex DJ ones!

buy these old imf tls80 studio speakers ...

used to have a pair ... these are 4 way hand built transmission speakers .... seller says they are in good condition (a few scratches on the cabinets but drivers are fine) ...

very easy to drive and will be a good match for your current amp .... bass, treble, clarity and soundstage are superb and I personally do not think that you will find anything better for your budget

... had mine connected to an old Pioneer A400 amp and a rotel cdp with van den hul speaker cable and a silver interconnect (interconnect never had a name on it and was bought from a carboot sale)

ebay item 260490607166 (buy it now for £545)

have seen these fetch way over £1000 and there is currently a pair on ebay with a buy it now of £1500 ... lots of info if you search on google ... these are becoming very scarce and prices will rise in the future

I agree with looking at Cerwin Vega. These are not hifi speakers, but guaranteed to produce enough bass for both you and your neighbours (hope I'm not one of them). It is what I can only describe as an "american" sound. I do recommend you have a listen before buy, to make sure this is what you want

B&W 683 - I know they retail at 900 quid but there are some great ex-dem deals out there. If you could cope with second hand then get the 604S3 as they make great home cinema fronts.

You won't need a sub!

angelface59 ... I have the old B&W DM2 speakers (3 way transmissions) .... bass is awesome (you can actually 'feel' the bass (if that makes sense) .... only paid £50 for mine

however, the IMF TLS80 are better at bass, clarity, and soundstage and would be superb as front speakers in a home cinema setup (IMHO)

will eventually get myself a another pair when my budget allows me

so where abouts would i find the RS8's for £500 or less? or the B&W's thinking about it, those old second hand ones on ebay look great but unfortunatly i do not have the money in my hands yet.

thankyou all for the great feedback

Hi dim_span & any other who may wish to respond.

Once I came to know of TL speakers I bought the DM 2s, then the TLS50MkII and now I have the TLS 80Mk IIs-each time I felt the joy of improvement. I love the clean low that comes out of these KEF woofers and the highs through Celestion HF 1300 & 2000. I looked up the spec of Pioneer A400 you used which id 85Wrms/channel. I have the Pioneer SA9800 (110Wrms/ch) from a house clearance-untested but I do have the SA9100 (75Wrms/ch) genltly tried in the garage.

In your opinion, which one would suit the speakers best for 2-ch listening? I have a Home Cinema set-up and use the receiver on 2-ch listening at the moment but unsure of its performance. I have to be be very careful not to add too many equipment into the living room-beloved has just about accepted the TLs.

Regards

To the original poster - The obvious standmount choice would be the Klipsch models such as the speakers I have. They peak at 600w. Can handle 150w input and are 8Ohms. They have high efficiency too and are great for parties.

However, I don't think they are what you are looking for. I would definitely go for floor standers and not standmounts as you want lots of bass. Try the Tannoy F4's.

Further to my earlier post from a few months back, the Q Acoustics 1050i is no longer available, even ex-dem, so your first option there would be the rather good 2050 which has just enjoyed a four star review in WHF and a five star review in Hi Fi World. Superb bass, by all accounts, and £370 for standard finishes and £449 for gloss piano black.

Hi

I'm no expert but for the OP I would say get some wharfedale xarus 5000's or to go for more bass get some Infinity Beta 40 floorstanders for around £200 and spend £300 on a BK XLS200 275w subwoofer This would produce lots of heavy bass and be great for movies too

Cheers

My dad's KEF Q7's with their reacetrackwoofer and a port for the front and rear of the speaker do give a deep fat bass, they do need room to breath though, but then any speakers needs a bit of room for the bass to go deep. Very good to have weight to the music. I don't think you really need a sub with those speakers for music duties only unless your room is huge.

They did get 5 stars in what hifi a few years back when they were reviewed as a multichannel speaker package. They do have a warm midrange to if you want and the highs aren't very bright but rather sweet for that price range.
