So I plumped for the Dynaudio Stand 4s that are made for my Contour S1.4s. They bolt to the speakers to create a very rigid structure. They have 2 columns that I have filled 3/4 full with dry sand (cooked in our oven under my wife's not so pleased supervision). They are spiked to the floor. My flooring is wall to wall carpet over concrete and the spikes pierce through to the concrete. These stands are 6 inches higher than my old stands which is perfect since I recently upgraded my listening chair to the IKEA poang chair (highly recommended by the way). The speakers are now right at ear level.
So, how does it sound? In a word...delicious! Moving the tweeters up also moved the woofer further from the floor and I think both frequency extremes have been improved by it. The bass is so tight and articulate yet full and deep. It's wonderful. But the detail and crispness of the mids and highs is definately a notch up from what I had before. This is really sounding tight and detailed, but still delivering bags of deep bass.
This started me thinking about how delicate achieving high end sound is and why people get so obsessed with it. Small changes can make all the difference.
