Hi

Looking for some help to get new speakers

My speakers below sound ok with my system but the bass is sounding to boomy and distorted for my taste at times to my ears, played about with the tone controls, speaker placement etc and seem to get the sound i want then i will hear the boominess again

Not sure if these are maybe to big for my room as room is 4metre x 3.5 metres

pretty new to hifi and this is my first "proper" setup, unable to demo as closest hifi store is 3 hours away

Any advise much appreciated

Try and demo some silver based speaker wire (qed), no boom hopefully

Cheers, might try that first, if it works be lot less expensive

The only component I can imagine introducing excess bass in your system is the amp. The Quads are not known for boomy bass - if anything they sit on the lighter side of things.

reggaedave's advice is excellent but also experiment with positioning. How close are your speakers to the walls, both at the back and the side?

Failing that you will need to decide whether you want to part with the speakers or the amp. Personally I don't think changing the speakers will really help and would recommend considering a change of amp to Rotel RA-04. The Rotel works extremely well with Quad speakers and doesn't have the bass-bump that the NAD can exhibit.

Actually I'm going to counsel caution. Making sideways moves (which is all the Rotel RA04 or CA 650A represent) is generally not a very good idea. I perhaps shouldn't have even suggested such a move.

Spend some proper time tweaking the set-up of your system. I'm sure it has more to give than you are presently getting.

Dazzler I now have the same problem as you.the bass always seems bigger than I want.im definetely in to standmounters.

Had a play about last night, tried my old CA 540V1 just to see what it sounds like....not as boomy but just didn't sound right, sounded bit cluttered to me and the channel seperation was noticeble last night....never noticed it that badly before untill i got the NAD....tried a few different CD's i have been listenly to lately, Some Tom Petty, Vampire Weekend and Echo and the bunnymen.....didn't have the clarity of the NAD.....swapped the NAD back in and was so much better....Vocals were clearer everythinging seemed un cluttered, and the channel seperation problem just disappeared. I tried movng the speakers around and and it doesn't seem as bad now after just listening to the CA.

think this weekend i will have a seriouse play about with placement and may even try re arranging my room just to see if i can get better sound

The Quads are rear ported, I believe. If that's the case, try bunging them. Also, this may sound bazaar, try and rest the speakers on a mouse mat. It worked with the Mother-in-Laws mini system, she has to have the speakers against the wall.

This is the problem I found with Nad - very good amp, mind you, but can be over zealous in the lower frequencies.

Good luck.

Cheers for the advice, will give it a go tonight, for once a mouse matt may come in usefull
