New Plasma or LCD

OK, been looking around recently to replace my 3 year old Sony 50 ich DLP LCD. Picture from the Sony is great with Sky HD but convinced that technology has moved on in the last 3 years so looking for a 46-50 inch 1080P plasma or LCD. Only got around a grand to spare so what's the best I can get?? I know that Pioneer is out of my reach but what's the next best? Looked at Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and LGs but impossible to decide which is best given the poor set up in Currys and comet.

I know I've said that the picture I have with my existing Sony is great but it's probably gonna need a new bulb soon and it's not exactly slim compared with current LCDs and Plasmas.

Any advice would be welcome!
