Tried something for the first time today... Popped a CD into my Sony BDP370.

I was a little shocked at how good it was. The top end has real texture and presence, and compared to my Marantz CD6000OSE, voices seem a little more defined and the bass is tighter.

I like to have dedicated spinners for music and movies, so I decided to change the Marantz (which I 'downgraded' to from a Roksan Kandy mk3, partly to release cash and partly because the Marantz gelled better with my kit).

So I now have a mint condition Arcam CD72 on the way... Let's see what that does...

I am a bit traditional, in the sense of using kit for its main purpose, but I think that more than few believe a cheap DVD drive plus DAC is better than a sophisticated cdp. Might be worth a try?

good luck with the Arcam...

Yes, I looked at the DAC route.

Budget limitations, and my lack of patience contributed to the purchase. It was the Arcam for £150 or a DAC for £250-300...

If I don't like the Arcam, I'll sell both CDPs and stick a Spitfire on the Bluray player.

The Spitfire II and the S370 works a treat. Couldn't tell it apart from my SA7001-KI when I had them.
