i am looking for a new cd player to go with my nad c320bee amp and mordaunt short floorstanding speakers. i have a budget of between three to four hundred pounds. is there a suitable player other than nad as i have found them temperamental, maybe the new marantz cd6003 or possibly cambridge audio azur 650c.

Either would be a good complement to your NAD - the more open, airy and detailed Marantz (no experience of CA) works very well - see my signature line below for a kindred spirit, albeit with a slightly older amp.
The 650C could be a good partner too; the weighty body of the NAD should offset what some see as a brightness in the Cambridge source.

Do bear in mind that your budget will get something a bit tastier if you're happy to consider a well sourced used item or ex-dem bit of kit. Plenty of dealers offer a warranty with this kind of thing and you can get some very good gear for your money.
Have a look at the Jordan Acoustics of Glenrothes site (seriously high end, but they get some lower cost items too), Holborn Hi-Fi/Glasgow Audio (Aberdeen and Glasgow respectively, same outlet), Vickers Hi Fi in York, Retro Reproduction in Ednburgh, Classique Sounds in Leicester, or Big Ears Audio who has a good site where you can make an offer as well as just stump up for the asking price. Not a bad idea! Good range of kit too.

Rega Apollo??? Little bit over budget @£475 but reduced from £586 till the end of September. Will last a few upgrades as well.

I second the Rega Apollo. (Find out from your Rega dealer when the price is due to go down to £475 and try and get a demo.)
It is the only other sub £1000 CD player I have really liked so far apart from my CD5i (although I have only heard the Arcam CD17, Rega Apollo, Cyrus 6 'something or other', Marantz CD6002, and my Naim so far this year.)

Buy something like a Cambridge 340C to use as a transport and pair it up with a Musical Fidelity V-DAC. Works VERY well and is extremely flexible too. Beats any CD player below the Rega Apollo I've ever heard.
If you can stretch to the Rega, though, go for it. Its a cracking player.
