Having searched the threads, this forum seems the most common for PS3 mentions... I have a 40gig PS3, the model before the newest slimline one. I want to ramp up the music on there as my disk is full and there isn't much on it! Any ideas on the best and biggest and cheapest option out there now??? Cheapest place to buy, I mean, as I want a decent one! When I used to lurk here there was often tips, so apologies if this is a repeat of a recent question but I have not been about for a bit. Cheers all.

e buyer is cheep,i think the ps3 have a 2.5 5400 sata drive and its easy enouth to do you might need a usb stick with latest firmware if it dosent start up with new drive.

if yoy use an external you just need to format it to fat32.

im going to put a 64gig ssd on mine and then hook up an external for storage.just to see if it runs a bit cooler really.

anyway im sure others will post with more info.

I believe Professor hat is the forum expert regarding upgrading PS3 Hard drives , he has a link on his pio

Try to find one of his posts , or I'm sure he will be along shortly with a reply

EDIT Try this link courtesy of the Prof

Thanks -

BUT this thread is more for pointers about what to buy (the how to is for later).

I have a PS3 in an under tv cabinet and am not sure there is room to plug anything in as an external drive - unless it can be built in or under etc. ?

Really just looking for an appropriate link to the current best buy / big replacement HDD

But you should still pay particular attention to Prof's point 2, particularly the height of the replacement drive.

good point dave.the first link 500gig is 9mm the 2nd link the 1tb drive is 10mm(the 1tb could be to tall?)

I bought a 500gb Weston digital from microdirect for around 40 pounds. I live round the corner from the shop so don't know how much delivery is, but there well known round here for how cheap they are. Have a look at there web site.

love the enthusiasm here, and the help.

My point was I don't know enough to google ebuyer and Dabs as I have no idea what will fit - complete ****** when it comes to HDD types.

Speculation, and possibles are great, but a 100% link to the current top deal would be better. I can guess myself. I know from experience there is usually a thread member who will be able to point out the "current" best option, out of all the ones for sale.

There is usually a "GET THIS 5 star" option to be had out of all the possibles.

Well with the greatest of respect , if by your own admission you have limited expertise with finding the correct HDD then perhaps you need to look for a company who will fit it for you , then you can be assured it will work

Here and I don't think there is any sneering, just a bit of forum banter.

That looks like a good price, could be tempted by that myself though not sure I could come close to filling 640Gb.

I don't mind banter - you gotta give as good back. Truth hurts, and chucking some of my old posts back at me made me bite!

Last question before I buy -

Some of the smaller HDD's have 16 MB cache (the 500gig), while this 640gig has an 8MB cache. Does that mean it is slower? Would I be better having less space and a bigger cache? Not sure what this means, in reality?

Then - one of the above gets bought! And the prof's thread will get a visit.

Cheers

Sorry if it came across like that. I actually reread the whole thing because my son suddenly piped up on Friday saying his 60GB was full -what can he do. Then I saw your old post in the middle of it and I chuckled because you answered your own question. It wasn't an attempt to throw it back at you in a sneery way, which is why I put the winky face in.

The cache size will have some impact on performance but there are other factors (e.g. buffer size) which may make the difference small even for a doubling in size.

I'm not sure you are going to get a 100% guaranteed 'best buy' link since most people will take a pick based on need, budget and availability then fit and forget it.

I retro-fitted a 120gb drive on my ps3 with little experience. I would recommend watching a few youtube demonstrations (there are quite a few) on the actual fitting procedure as well as the prof's thread. It is not a complex procedure, just perhaps a bit nervy if inexperienced.

cheers guys - just bought the 640 gig one.

Appreciate the help, and I didn't take it it personally! You just get a bit sensitive when you have to admit you are a buffoon when it comes to tech.

Any other tech, and I'm ok.
